I bought my k&n filter about a month ago when i was gonna hack my air can. But then i read that a lot of people say not to do it cuz it bad for the car to suck in all that hot air. They said to make a heat shield. I was wondering if i should just put the filter in and remove the air silencer for now and leave the can the way it is, untill i figure out what to do with my can. How much of a difference do you think it will make? Is it worth loosing the 40 i payed for the filter if i don't end up using it with the heatshield?

yea I faced this dilemna as well.

Put the filter in for sure, and remove that silencer.

I feel it is a good idea to remove some material on the passenger side end and rear/passenger side area. You can cut away the plastic horn part, but leave the drivers side part on. I see it acting as a shield for the hot air. You can drill holes in the end of the air can in a neat pattern of your choice. And you can cut (saw, dremel etc) away some metal on the pass side rear corner of the can itself. If you get an upper intercooler pipe you will have to to make it fit anyway.

My scanner is hooped, so I can't send pics, but this worked. I notice better throttle response, and it pulls harder. Also more turbo type noises :) This is not a huge gain, but it is worth it.

As for the heat, I got the car hot, then let the fan come on, and felt around the aircan area. No real hot air was in the area that air enters the aircan. It was hot near the drivers side and front of it tho, so avoid that area. No biggie now, as the air is nice and cold, but in the summer, gahh, lots of hot air. It will make a difference in performance. If the engine ingests hot air, it is more prone to detonation. Also as the cooler air is more dense the fuel system will allow more fuel. More dense air + more fuel is a good thing hehe :)

Best of luck, and have fun
