After installing my evo 3 16g i have always had a small oil leak at the return and i recently decided to remake the return line cause i wasnt a big fan of the one that came in the turbochargers.com install kit. When taking the line on and off a couple times i overtorqued the bolts that hold the flange into the oil pan and stripped out the one of the holes. I bought a recoil thread repair kit and when i got the coil in i dropped the tang (little metal piece to twist coil with ) in the oil pan. I tried to use a magnet to get the piece out through the oil return line hole and the oil drain hole but i was unsuccessful. Does anyone have any idea of how i could fish that little thing out of there without having to go through the hassle of dropping the pan?

man that is unfortunate though you are not the first to strip those weak threads in the oil pan. I eventually took my pan and welded a -10 an fitting straight too it so i didnt have to mess with those bolts.

Decide how much you care about that engine and weather or not you want to do things the right way. That tang could go through the mesh of the pick up tube. Would it? no one knows. If you take the pan off make sure you clean the surfaces very well and seal you pan properly otherwise your gonna cause yourself a second problem when it leaks later on.

Pray. Or maybe use a really strong magnet (the kind that they use on those magnetic name-tags) to get it out. If not, you will have to drop the pan, because a little 10mm helicoil thread repair thing that breaks off has a high probability of making it through your pickup mesh. I think your filter would catch it, though, but I don't know.

Just drop the pan. It will take an extra 20 minutes and it's worth the hassle. You can retorque the rods while your in there, make a new gasket for the oil pan, and have your pan hottanked to get X amount of years of crap out of it. It's a win win situation other than the extra labor, and it's really not THAT bad.

well im gonna go buy a gallon of cheap oil and see if it will flush out and if not then i will see about dropping the pan. Thanks guys.

Well, i got a little telescoping magnet and fished around the oil pan again with no luck and then i washed 4 quarts of 1.29 oil through the engine to try and wash it out with no luck, after that didnt work i started to look at taking the oil pan off but my book said i had to take off the transfer case housing and get a special tool which didnt sound like any fun at all so i decided to try my telescoping magnet once more and after about 20 minutes i found the little thing. I was pretty damned estatic when i pulled that magnet out and that tiny little tang was on the end, i really did not want to have to drop that oil pan.

once again, thanks guys
