what kind of oil should i use?

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

the oil you use is entirely up to your driving conditions. ie. weather, and how hard you drive. i suggest a thicker oil due to the higher miles. and if its hot then definately thicker oil. here is a link to go to:

Try using synthetic oil. I use Mobil1 Synthetic!!! :D

if you've used non-synthetic oil don't switch now. using non-synthetic oil builds up deposits on your gaskets and seals inside your engine. over time these deposits actually help seal your engine. if you switch to synthetic it will eat those deposits away and your engine will start sweating (leaking) oil - i know this first hand becuase it happened to me. i switched to synthetic for like 6k miles and my engine was smelling funny after running it for more than a few minutes (burning oil) and when i checked it was slowly leaking oil from everywhere. i didn't believe this notion till it happend and i highly doubt that the burning oil was due to anything else because i've switched back to non-synthetic oil and after about 2k miles the smell went away. there is a slight chance that this might be coincidence and the whole thing about synthetic and nonsynthetic deposits might just be a wives tale but in my actual experience it is correct.

if you wanna use synthetic - get all your gaskets and seals replaced - then start using it.

thats my 0.02¢

actually 20/50 is good for that high-mileage of a motor. as you put miles on your engine you wear away at the internal parts - putting them further and further away from each other - using a thicker oil makes that distance not so hard on the parts themselves as they interact with each other... or so my mechanic tells me ;)

i just put that in my car today as well, no difference between regular syn. just a psycological way to make more money, LOL... oh and 20-50 isn't bad but it is a little thick, maybe just go with 15w-40... rotella now makes a synthetic version of it. mobil1 10 30 always works for me though, hope it helps...

I usually use 10w 30 also but i'm going to trying the 15w 40 when I change my oil.

The manual recommends that if you where temps are from 32F and up use 20W-40. I use this in the summer time and then go to 10W 30 in the winter. It's thicker but are engines thin out oil easily especially when it's hot it really thins it out.

I scored the deal at wal mart, they got a 5 quart jug for 17.99 of the new syth. blend its the sh!t. But I had to go to murrys auto to pick up a mobil 1 filter.

I was told this about the "new" Mobile 1 oil:

"Due to the lawsuit they lost with Castrol (in which castrol won the right to label their non fully synthetic oil (it really uses a base3 dino oil as a base) as fully synthetic), and the fact that mobil is selling out... the current mobil 1 is going to be replaced with mobil's own BaseIII "fully synthetic" in order to compete (castrols "fully synthetic" is less expensive to manufacture then the REAL mobil1, so they are losing out on profits)."

If you drive hard all the time or your engine is producing more power than stock I'd recomend 20-50, it has a better film strength so it can handle more pressure without letting the metal parts touch (that's when your engine wears).

I run Redline and it's worth the extra money to me. My brother switched from Redline to Mobil 1, and saw a 3 MPG loss with Mobil 1. He's since switched back to Redline and actually has gain back the 3 and a couple more MPG. If the big boys use it on their full race cars, then it must be good for street cars. IMO! :D

I run 5-30 synthetic in the winter since it will reach below 0. During the summer/race season I run 10w40 in the 92 daily driver and 20w50 in the racing 96.

Why does the new mobil one 10w-30 say high mileage formula on it? I feel weird using a high mileage formula in my car which has 45,000 miles on it. And I noticed that the 20w-50 says High performance formula. What will that stuff do for our cars? Is it ok to use that even though the owners manual says 10w-30.

I just changed to the Amsoil 10W40. I used their engine flush first before putting the oil in. Works fine so far-- no leaks or anything. Engine has 59,000 on it. I think I may be getting slightly better mileage with it, but I haven't checked too closely yet.

Because most new cars out there recommend 5W-30. Please keep in mind that this is for FUEL MILEAGE and not for protecting your engine. 10W-30 is thicker, and hence for "higher mileage engines" for the reasons others have already stated. I am an engineer and have been in "heated" discussions with other engineers (who also work on their cars) about this whole viscosity issue. I am not sure at this point the answer. I would love to talk to some factory engine guys "off the record" and see what they run in their own vehicles. I am willing to be it is different that what your owners manual tells you.
