I used to dream of an exhaust like that. (I like the sleeper look).
It was 3" stainless and had a stock looking twin tip muffler. It did run under though. But it was cheap and I heard it was quite. I couldn't afford one expecially since my exhaust (stock) is till okay. But I always figured that would be the one I would get. Now I can't find it. It was made by Bosal. Looks like my reply got moved up to the first post. Strange.

Looking for a good exhaust for the following purpose (on my '95 AWD):

To keep as much performance as possible while:
1) Fitting in stock location (no hanging under the rear crossmember like my current HKS)
2) Being relatively quiet (meaning closer to stock than the dull roar that my HKS is)
3) Being something not prone to rusting out (unlike my rusty old HKS)
4) As lightweight as possible (I agree with Chapman, add lightness wherever possible ;) )

Try the apexi exhaust. Not too ricey for haveing a huge melon shooter for a muffler.

I have the Apexi N1, I like it. If you are worried about rust do what I did, before you put the exhaust on, give it 2-3 coats of high temp bbq paint. You might want to look into the Thermal exhaust system, it is a little quieter and is SS.

..and it hangs under the rear crossmember, so you can scratch that one off the list.

Correct me if Im wrong, but I thought all awd exhaust systems go udner the rear cross member?

I think you are right. All aftermarket exhaust systems go under the rear cross member. I haven't seen an exhaust system that goes over it like the stock one.

Hmm, the dream exhaust. A majority of aftermarket exhaust systems because of diameter hang below the crossmember. Maybe if you get something smaller than 3" diameter it'll work but who makes something like that? Why do you need it not to hang under? You might have to go the custom route. Ever lift a titanium cat-back exhaust? You can use one hand.

Try thermal, GREAT tone! Or dejon for their awd 2g exhaust, it's loud, but you can get an oval can and resonator (esque) option for it to REALLY quiet it down. They told me it should last years, mine is only rusting on a couple of the weld points, which i will sand and cover with non-rust spray. The dejon is a little heavy though, so i'd go for anything either titanium (if you can get it) or SS.

Exactly what I'm looking for as well...with one addition.

5) No large muffler tips or angled mufflers.

So no aftermarket companies make a 2.5 O.D. system that hangs in the stock position? 3" is overkill for me.

Yeah, I thought there were some 2.5" ones out there that went through the stock location, but not real sure.

My problem with the 3" is that I rally the car. Even lifted all the way up to the top of the coilovers, I've been on some really rough tarmac stages where I'll hit yump on a high-crown road and the back end of the car ends up landing on, and skating on the exhaust where it hangs down. Has a very negative impact on control over the car :)

Titanium would be nice if someone made a system like that within the other restrictions.

If I have to go custom, I know a good place to get it done, but it's just a lot easier to buy something already made and well though out :)

Thanks for the comments so far, keep 'em comin'!
