chtown,
hey i have a 2g with a 6 bolt t3/t4 61 trim 4" inlet i got rid of all my stock maf and piping cause im goin to go with the gm maft setup so id like to know if i can just clamp a air filter right on to my turbo or do i need a bit of intake pipe to come away from it a bit then clamp the filter to it??? im thinking the HKS style 4.5" inlet and just reduce it down to a 4" for my turbo. What do you guys think?? Thanks!!

Most people will probably recommend a K&N. It is tried and true. There are a number of sizes available. I would determine where the filter will be located and then try to determine what size/shape will work best. (I would use a larger filter if possible more area so it won't need to be cleaned as often)

Look on here and find the one:

You can put it directly on your turbo, but that will cause the engine to take in hot air from the engine bay. You could rig some sort of cold air pipe the either goes down closer to the ground or over to the right side wheel well. I personally think it is worth the trouble to get cold air to the engine. Some people are weary that water will be ingested. You could fashion a splashguard to help reduce the chance of water hitting the filter directly.

AEM makes a filter bypass thing that is supposed to save an engine from ingesting water. These are not intended for turbocharged cars and I have read of people having them fail sending shrapnel through the turbo.

I was talking to the guys over at Slowboy Racing yesterday and they found that they are getting better results from Vibrant Air Filters. This is on both their race cars and their personal cars.

What do you mean exactly by better results? You're not honestly going to gain a ton of hp from an air filter. For the original poster here's an idea for you, its about the biggest air filter you're going to fit directly on the turbo. Personally I like the idea of custom piping for a cold air intake in your fenderwell. Colder air is better air.

Or try Dejon if you don't feel like making custom pipes. Item number CIP-1gL

Another good option is the FP 4 inch intake pipe

I have seen setups with large turbo's where people just bolt on the filter directly to the compressor inlet...Although I can think of some negatives, I haven't actually heard any bad complaints from users...The best filter I can think of would be the 9" long K&N, which is I think the largest filter they make...Whether it has a 4" outlet, I am not sure tho

Otherwise, if you were to go the intake route, FP makes a sweet 4" pipe and the option to upgrade to a much larger K*N filter...IMO, for the low price they offer it, I consider it to be quite a steal...Great setup

in my opinion, if the filter has to be crushed just to get it in there, then it doesnt fit, so that would be the smallest air filter that doesnt fit. I use a k&n 9 inch long air filter. if your getting a dejon intake pipe, look for a 8 inch pipe if you have a 1ga, i dunno about the rest of them, but the pop up light motor is in the way and causes my filter to not fit the best, i just have to bend them up a little to get it to fit in, but the filter isnt crushed. if i sanded down the pipe a little it would work fine.

Uh-huh. Sell those, do they? Yeah.

i have a 4" dejon tool intake pipe now but im selling all of it with the maf setup so its no good to me i will get a hks air filter 4" and run it of a 4" piece of pipe a litle piece away from the turbo may put a heat shield around the filter as well thanks guys!!

I had one from extremepsi on the car for the red bling factor at a car show once upon a time, but then I realized my mistake and put the K&N back on the car that came with it from the previous owner...

here's my K&N...

It works good, so why mess with it? If you get a bigger turbo, then get a bigger filter, but if you're at a point where you're just replacing the factory airbox then get the K&N because it's tried and true and it's big. You can't see in the picture, but it bolts into a bracket as well to keep it from moving around.
