Strength of Internals?

I couldn't get the search key to work so I decided to make a topic.

I was wondering, how long will the stock internals last before they are blown? Like, boost levels measured roughly. I'm looking at a 97 GS-T and I didn't know if I should upgrade the turbo and intercooler first or buy internals and prepare for bigger boost. Thanks for all help.

They can take a lot of boost but you need to protect them from knock and detonation. Go ahead and upgrade the turbo+intercooler but if you want to go over 16psi you'll need a pump,fpr,safc,intake,exhaust,boost guage,egt guage,oil pressure guage, and a datalogger would help you tune a lot.

You wont need to upgrade engine internals till you are making around 400 to the wheels.

More than a few guys have DYNO'd 500hp to the wheels on stock internals. This is of course on a Big rod motor. 7 bolts need not apply. I HAVE seen a few dyno sheets of 450whp 7 bolt cars, so it is possible for them to make good power, just not 6 bolt #'s. As for the magical 500hp on big rods, don't expect to do this without PERFECT tuning. One little ping, and you got a pretzel for a rod. Guys have run turbos as big as 60-1's at 30psi on stock internals for a good amt. of time.
