OK, Im looking for opinions on what to do with my 2 cars. I have a 1990 Talon TSI AWD 5-speed, 160K miles with a seized engine. otherwise a clean car. I also have a 96 Talon TSI AWD (automatic) with 250K highway miles but just as clean (if not cleaner) as the 1G. Id prefer to build a 5-speed car. But I like the modern appearance of the 96 model. What to do here? Can I take the 5-speed and and transfer out of the 1G and put it into the 2G? Or should i scrap a perfectly clean 96 TSI and put the engine in the 1G? Im also aware that either car can benefit from doner parts from the other car to increase performance or reliability. Id like to convert my 96 over to a 5-speed but dont know if its even possible. I own a speed shop but have never attempted a swap like this. Any opinions, information or success stories would be well appreciated. Ill take in all input before making a decision. I plan on freshening up the engine before using it in either car so mods can be done. The left over parts from the doner car will be sold in this forum for reasonable prices.
thanks everyone

Well, the 1g tranny wont work in the 2g because the lack of mounting locations on the tranny. The 2g engine will be worthless(more or less) to swap into the 1g. Thats why people use the 1g 6 bolt engine as an upgrade in the 2g.

My suggestion is pull the 6 bolt from the 1g and rebuild, reinstall in the 1g, and mod it. Now, use the 2g as a daily driver and the 1g as a weekend warrior. Or you can always pull the 1g engine, rebuild it, install it into the 2g, and find a 2g 5spd tranny and rear diff and scrap the 1g.

I was under the impression you can't put a 7bolt in a 6bolt's place. It just physically won't work. Just God's way of telling us how not to live.

you atleast have one running car right now, dont #### it up and make two garage weights. work on them independantly of eachother. It would make more sense to sell the 2g as a running vehicle and use the money from it towards the 90 if anything else.

because of the fact the the front and back mounts are on the tranny on a 2g i dont know if a 2g block has provisions to bolt the 1g front and back brackets to the block. So best to leave each as is, and just get respective parts for each car from similar years.

I think you are thinking of putting a 2g tranny on a 1g. Because there was a 1g 7-bolt if you remember the 93-94's had the 1g 7bolts. Which were different from the 2g 7-bolts.

keep the 1g and sell the 2g, you dont get too much cuz of the mileage, but it'll pay for the engine rebuild or replacement on the 1g and have some left for parts

Cant put 2g engines in a 1g, or 1g trannys in a 2g, due to the mounts.
