I'm installing a oil filter housing w/ external oil cooler and line to feed turbo,
my existing line comes from top of head. adding to that a turbo timer.

Q: since this is my daily driver, on stop and go traffic in sunny Miami, is it really worth it?
what happens to air to oil cooler when no air flow?

Well when you are stopped you are not loading up your motor and so you won't really be getting your oil hot enough to even need the cooler. It's mainly only under boost that you will see a good raise in your oil temps. When I swited from the stock water/oil cooler to the 90 oil cooler I noticed a big difference in oil temps. Like mainly I wasn't cooking my oil like I was before. I went like 2K miles before my oil even started to turn a dark brown. Made it a PITA to check my oil as it always looked fresh and it's just hard to see it on the dipstick. Oh yeah and I beat on my car everyday. Pushing like 25 PSI on a large turbo.

So go ahead and don't worry about it. You'll be glad you did.

I just did that mod and the nice side benefit was lowering my coolant temps 20*+. Mark

great mod. you also remove a common point of failure; the heat exchanger.

my water/ oil cooler just broke again!!!

Whats involved in changing to a 90 style cooler?? i searched and didn't find a direct answere?

what do i need?
How hard of a job am i looking at?

thk

I bought a kit from DSMotorsport aka diamondstarmotorsport. You need a '90 oil filter housing and gasket, a cooler(I got a B&M tranny cooler) and lines, mine are steel braided with Earl's fittings.
Not too difficult to install. One or maybe 2 of the 4 bolts that attach the filter housing are under the plastic side cover so that has to be loosened near the bottom to access the bolt. I had the braided lines professionally installed into the earls fittings and also changed the fittings that thread into the cooler itself from the supplied aluminum to brass. Yoyu could probably piece this together cheaper if you wanted to buy the parts individually but not sure about that. check it out at www.DSMotorsport.com Mark
