i was just wondering where everybody has there egt mounted on the manny and if they have any pics of it. i have seen many variations of where it should be and just wondering what everybody here does

when you drill into the manifold make sure the car is running and you use PLENTY of oil. the oil will keep the bit from seizing and the exhaust gasses will push all the metal shavings out...metal in the turbine is no good! (i believe it is a 1/4" pipe tap)

If you leave the manifold on then the metal shavings are going to sit in your manifold. when you start the car up they are going to shoot through your turbine housing and could damage your turbine wheel. So it would be better do it off the car and most definatley tap the manifold.

Is there a certain distance from the head that is recommended. I noticed a couple of you said 4 inches. But is it really that critical. I have mine installed about 1 inch from the head because my header is wider near the port, so the EGT probe will be less of a restriction in the tube. I've heard people say that further down the runner is better because there may still be fuel burning in the exhaust manifold a few inches after the port. But I would think we are more concerned about the temperatures in the cylinder than what happens after it leaves the head. Anyone care to share some thoughts?

Thanks for the link, but it did not answer the question of proper location for me. Was the 4 inch location based on convenience or the proper location based on real testing.

I did notice that my EGT responds much faster to temperature changes while driving than it did before when it was further down the runner. I would rather know the temp is too high before molten aluminum is passing by the probe.:D

When I did mine I left the car running so as to blow the shavings out .
Wear some kind of eye protection because when I was in the act of drilling the initial hole there were lots of shavings flying up in my face & eyes. Not pleasant.....

I think everyone is missing the point of my questions. I looked at the pics and read the entire page. But it does not show or state why the distance between 4 & 8 inches is the "correct" place to put it based on factual data.
It just seems to be where everyone puts it because of easy access vs. the best location for flow & response.
