85k miles- crank pulley bit the dust. Oddly happened right after satan replaced the 3 drive belts for me, but unfortunately there is no way to tell if it was caused by excessive belt tension on the new belts or not. I had them check the crank pulley when they put the belts on and they said it was fine, but 2 weeks later it isnt. Weird.

Well, at least it happened when I was pulling into my garage and not at cruising speed. Since I avoided timingbelt/head damage, I decide to go ahead and replace the t-belt, b-belt and water pump while they are in there doing the pulley. :thumb:

I replaced mine last week on my 92,173k mi, and when I pulled the motor in my 91,209k mi, that bi*** was split in half too.

Its kind of weird how it seperates like that, isnt it? Did they make a revision to the part, or is the new one just the same old POS that I'll have to replace in another 80k miles?

I'll post the pics I have of the parts when I get home tonight.

While I was in there, I did the timing belt, balance belt and water pump. The belts had some normal wear, but the water pump was in pristine condition. I know the previous (and only other) owner never replaced it so it was original. The insides looked exactly the same as the new one, which I though was weird. No sign of corrosion or anything. I'm throwing it in the parts bin as a backup.

"In" there? Only four bolts through the wheelwell.

Still, never really a bad idea.[/QUOTE] The belts had some normal wear, but the water pump was in pristine condition. I know the previous (and only other) owner never replaced it so it was original. 104k.. i dropped it on the floor and it literally FELL apart into 2 pieces.. haha

Would this really cause head/valvetrain damage? And if so why?

If you were at cruising speed... say 3250 rpm and the timing belt falls off, then the crank and cams could possibly begin to spin at different speeds causing the cams to force valves into oncoming pistons and destroying your engines precious internals.

The timing belt will not fall off. The outer ring of the harmonic balancer can cut through the timing belt cover and cut the belt or pieces of the cover can wedge its way between the timing belt and lower pulley causing a broken belt or jumped timing.

I'm curious about this as well. I'd much rather buy a lightened one with a harmonic balancer that will last indefinently if one is available.

I heard buschurracing sells one.

Damn, I'm glad this came up in time. I'm having this awful squeak coming from I thought my alternator pulley or belt. We've tried changing the tension to no avail. It goes away after about 15-20 seconds, but it sounds terrible. Could this noise be related?

My car also squeaks for 15 seconds or so, but only when it is cold outside. It sounds terrible though. :notgood:

Mine made the squeek noise only on a cold start- once it warmed up it went away. I changed the drive belts thinking that could be it, but it ended up being the pulley that was making the noise.

When the car is cold try seeing if the outer ring has seperated from the center section.

Hey man, My car does that, and each time, the alternator regulator has gone bad, like it will squeak real bad for like 15 secs, then go away, but when I turn my lights on, its squeals and the voltage drops to like 12.2 and doesn't stop squealing until I turn my lights off. :talon:

Exactly. When I turn on my air it makes it worse, and may go away if I turn it right back off, or rev the engine. I'll get them changed ASAP. I think I will just go back with OEM, though because I've heard bad things about lightened aftermarket pulleys for DSMs. Unless there is a certain brand, or certain ones to that people change and have no problems.

hey guys, sorry to thread steal but i am having a horrible problem with my car sqealin at start up, it has gotten worse and worse every day for the past month. ive installed new belts, PS and alternator, switched out the PS pump and changed the crank pulley ( oem from mitsu). it squeals worse now than ever before and it doesnt go away. ive been f*ckin around with it for a couple weeks and cant get it to stop. waterpump is also new. it almost looks like the crank pulley isnt on a straight line with the PS pump pulley and waterpump pulley. is there a spacer or washer that goes in between the pulley and the crank that i forgot to install?? any help is greatly appreciated

sorry again 91boost

thanx

I had a buddy who's AC compressor locked up. At first we thought it was loose belts. When we would tighten it, it would help for a little bit. Then one day it would not start up. After lots of trouble shooting we found the compressor had locked up. It was a terrable sound for about 15-20 seconds then it would stop before the comp locked up.

I had my pulley break at 72,000 miles. When it broke it (could spin it by hand) it made my timing belt jump off and messed 15 of my valves (I was fixing to start beating on it).

Well, I checked my pulley and it was starting to separate, so I am replacing it. I've got 83K on the clock. And just this morning a friend of mine came in and said his let go on his 1G and it sounds like his engine is toast. :(

I'm glad this topic came up.

Let us know if that fixes you up. I have a squeeler too. I will check my pulley soon.

Well guys i had a pulley go on me oh about 2 years ago... cost me a motor (ac belt wrapped around the lower crank sprocket) bent 15 valves and put number 16 through the #4 piston. WTF just check them when you chage the oil or replace it with an aftermarket piece.

Who...besides Buschur, would you or anyone recommend?
