Hey guys i was just wondering what kind of EGT temps you guys read.. by that i mean


1.Idling (stoplight)
2.Drving (moving anywhere at the same speed)
3. Racing (moving around the tach constantly)

just wondeing what kind i should run really, and what do you guys think is a warning for running to rich or lean????
 
I usually idle between 350-450*
Roughly 500 when cruising in 4th or 5th
End of 1/4 mile usually aroun 830 or so
 
I don't know how you stay at 500C at 70mph, but anyhow... If car is warmed up, then I usually idle around 520C. When cruising, its around 70MPH, its around 750-750C. As for WOT, depending on gearing and speed. top of 3rd & 100MPH ish, around 850'ish, but thats due to aggressive timing and fuel curves.
 
The consensus from what I've read is that 1650 F is the "sweet spot" for EGTs, but that you definitely don't want to go past that-- things start melting around 1700 F. BTW, I hate metric gauges. :D
 
Lean is hotter and rich cooler. This still is not exact. If your timing is pulled enough your egts will rise also. It's more of a saftey measure. If the egt go really high then something is wrong. I also read that the egt gauges aren't really accurate. Like I said I use it more for a saftey measure. I tune for timing. If the gauge just pegs hot then somethings wrong. That has happened before.

No no no... Im only at 500c when Im cruising in 4th or 5th on the streets, which is like 40-45mph. When Im on the freeway at around 70 its at like 650-700 :D

curising at 65-70 mph 1290-1310 {depends on grade of hill}
end of 1/4 1450 at 6k

yes i know runnin rich. but im not gonna blow it up
 
The EGT probe mus be heat-shieleded (just keep the stock ex manifold heat shield, your AC fan will thank you for it too) or it will give you false readings. I see about 500 (celcious) at idle and about 650-750 while cruising. At WOT I have it tuned that it reaches 900 at the end of the 1/4. I've seen as high as 1100 every now and then and the engine still purrs like a kitten. And yes if you have bad timing retard issues you will skyrocket past the 900/1600 by just cruising around, but high EGT's by cause of timing retard is nothing to worry about.

That's correct but it's still a safety measure because how do you know what it causing the high egts unless your logging or something else.
 
Agreed - I believe 900C is the "Oh $hit" point and you don't want to hang around that temp too long. I see 800-825C @ 80mph uphill on freeways.
 
I dont know if you guys do but if your runnin the car pretty hard like aroun 1500 to 1600, and its at night, have you ever gotten out and looked at your manifold?, mines always bright orange, at what temp would the manifold crack?
