Hey guys, I am planning on buying a cat-back exhaust system for my 97 GST. What brand is best??? HKS? GReddy? Skunk 2? ApexI? None of these? Price is no object; I want the best.

we all know those are good companies you should search or ask for sound clips. when i had my 95tsi i went to a muffler shop and got 2 3/4 pipe from the downpipe back and it didnt sound any different then other gsts and tsis i have come across.

RoadRace sells Espelir now instead of Apexi N1, they said it was better quality. I've heard it's too loud though.

Apexi N1

I just recently installed the Apexi N1 w/ the Apexi Stainless GT Downpipe
Easily by far one of the best exhaust tones on a vehicle.

I also bought a stainless 02 sensor housing
(but I found out the hard way its pretty much impossible to get the bolts off because they're positioned so goddamn hard to get to. I wouldn't take on that task unless you bought another turbo and you could pull the manifold)

only thing about the n1 is it is not stainless steel.

that was important to me, so i went with a greddy sp2. the diameter of piping isn't 3" but i decided it would still be sufficient for my goals.

ATR I've got the 3" stainless catback now (parts are on their way to be turboback) :) and it sounds soo good, its got the perfect idle and low end sound to it and when it get into the high rpms it doesnt become overwhelming. For less than 500 its not too shabby :thumb:

i run a thermal RnD with a highflow cat / test pipe and it sounds awesome. Its not incredibly loud, but it has a very distinct "powerful note" to it.

my friend has a Thermal R&D on his GSX it sounds beautyful.... and the performance is great out of it.. thats what im getting this weekend..

I have a Thermal R&D and it's worth the money, the sound is awesome. I now have acheap ebay downpipe and it sounds even better. Good luck.

I always see this type of thread about the 'best exhaust' and people always say how their exhaust has a low, deep-tone. I've never heard a DSM that didn't sound like the next one. A few exceptions of course. As in, heavily tuned, or cheap-o crap-ass poop-pipe. I've heard all the ones he should buy and they really all sound the same. Anyone agree?

Congratulations you are the 47856 person to ask this question. "The best" is a relative term, all of the aforementioned are quality pieces, they all sound similar, with slight variances. If you are asking because you are in the market . I say evaluate your goals for the car, buy the correct diameter for your goals and get a quality piece. There are many things to consider. Emmissions, there are links that post sound clips if you are concerned with sound, etc...
Above all, shop around, plenty of deals in the classifieds.
Good luck :p

The best is what your local reputable speed shop builds. I priced exhaust for a year (while saving) and got mine through a small speed shop, their price was the best by far, they got me ALL of the options I wanted (even the stockesque muffler) and even with SS they still beat any "big company" by 300 bucks easy. I say save your money and get what you want. 3" mandrel turbo back, SS with hi-flow cat = $650 installed. A similar built ATR system was about 800. And its a damn fine piece if I may say so myself. My friends who are 5.0 mustang gurus even like the sound (which surprised the hell out of me). Don't settle, get what you want. The "best" is what you want and what works best for your goals.
