ok here goes....

I just came back from gettin my trans tune up. (by the way is it true 94 AWD A/T don't have trans filters?)

Well anyway...for the past few days i've notice this lil ticking sound...when idleing and at low speed. I always hear about people talking about their lifters ticking. So i tryed to see if i could locate the sound. It didn't sound like if it was coming from the head, so i guessed it was a heathsheild or somthing. But when I went to the shop 2day. I asked the guy to look for the sound. He called me over and told me the sound was comin from the oil pump... i looked and it does sound n feel like its coming from the oil pan.

So of course i came home and looked on the tuner to see if ne1 else had this problem. and i found this...

From not2fast:

" if it's valve tick, as it most likely is, use a thicker viscosity oil. as engines get older their tolorance get bigger, 'cause of wear. by using a thicker oil, such as sae 30 or 20w50, your oil pump will be able to move more oil to the places it is needed the most...aka the lifters. the reason more oil will be moved is 'cause the oil is less likely to blled past the 'gears' in the oil pump. i have a 96 GS with 120k on it, if i use 10w30 it ticks, but when i use sae 30 or 20w50 it shuts the fu*k up. fyi.. i use sae 30 in the winter and 20w50 in the summer/spring... "

SO i was wondering do yous guy think i might be having the same problem. and can be fixed by changing my oil?.. or do u think its just my oil pump being shoot and i have to replace it?.....thanks for the help in advance.... Please help ASAP need this work for work... can't have the engine die on me........ do u guys think its safe to drive for a few days or should i just park it n call out sick?.....thanks again

Well thicker oil doesnt solve the problem, it just hides it and bandaids it for you. Think of the thicker oil as being more guuey than thinner oil. It sticks to all the parts better and dripps slower, thus keeping it a little more lubricated as the oil will keep a bigger range/tolerance lubed better. It also will usually stop or ease lifter tick cause it provides a better "cushion" for the lifters.... It is just what happens to older motors dude, and its not a bad thing to run thicker oil in there either..... but Id be willing to bet its your problem

ok heres the update..

ok about the filter?  i feel like an a$$hole that guy was lieing to me..... i went to an autopart store to see if they had the filter....they said they did....So i went back to the place with my dad... and now the guy is saying that he never said DSM don't have filters. he said that they (Oil Well) didn't have DSM filters. I hate when pple try to play me just becuz I'm 17. but watever....

ANYWAY......

Ok i took my car to a different place, this time it was a shop where we know the guy.....he seems to know what he is talkin about....

Well anyway....the 2nd guy told me it might be a crack in my flexplate....because when i put it in drive it sounds alot....but when its in park or neu its not as bad.... I asked him if he thinks it maybe my lifters he said he didn't think so because the sound comes from the bottom not from the head.
So now i really don't know whats wrong.

Does neone know how a crack may be caused on a flexplate.....do u have to hit something ....or could it just crack out of nowhere....cuz i the sound started a few days ago ....n i really haven't done nething to it.....expect change oil....but it started be4 the oilchange....

could some1 please help? My baby is falling apart...she is making a lot of sounds tha make me worry.....and i just got her....i don't wanna have to give her up.....my dad is gettin mad cuz he told me not to buy this car.....n i didn't listen now its blowin up in my face.....

Where is the tick coming from? Is it coming from the top of the engine? If so, it is most likely your lifters ticking. This is a common problem among 1g DSMs. The easy fix is to you a factory oil filter with Mobil1 10W-30 motor oil. You can use 5W-30 or 0W-30 and then switch back to 10W-30 after the ticking goes away.

If nothing else is wrong with your car and it drives ok, I wouldn't worry too much.

well the sound is coming from the bottom of the engine....and i'm useing 5W-30... and there is a few other things wrong with it too...which is y I'm worring ....Maybe the other problems could be linked and help yous make out what the sound may be.

2nd problem....

when I'm driving on the high way goin like 60mph its sounds ok but when i let go of the gas.....it sounds like if i am driving a Honda...it sounds like a civic with a rice muffler....

3rd promble.....

When I press on the gas when it gets to say like 2500 RPM it makes this weird rattle noisy for like a sec....and then i hear the turbo spool...

As you can see there are many lil things that are wrong with my car....which is why i am worring.....

if ne1 could help me with ne of these problems i beg you take the 2 mins and help me out.....Please don't be like "oh there is no hope for this newbie" and let me hanging.......I wanna have a modded DSM too....i bought alot of things already....n don't wanna have to sell the car b4 even puttin nething on...thanks guys....
ANY WISEMEN out there...please help......

Check your heat shield on your cat, and all your exhaust heat shields if it's coming from under your engine, or under your car. I had a friend who was freaking about a ticking then rattling on his car and when I checked under it his heat shield over his cat had come loose and was sitting on the exhaust. Hope it's nothing major! Good luck! :thumb:

nah its not the cat's heatshield...That freaked me out lasted week. But I fixed that.

The sound is coming from right under the engine's pan. To me it sounds like the oil pump...

I'm still a newbie since I'm only 17 ...and haven't had many cars b4...ok this is my first car...

But i was wondering do you"s" think it may be my idle....or timing perhaps one of them is messed... causing my engine to "sake" (it hops a little if u understand what i mean with that) Causing my oil pump to keep knock into my oil pan, making the ticking noise?.....and perhaps some of the exhast rattles too?.... does this sound likely?....

If so what can i do about my timing and/or idle....(besides timing belt).
If ne1 could help me i would appreciate it... cuz the shop i took it to didn't even look at it alot...n jump and said flexplate.....and the other guy said oil pump.....So any help could save me $ so i could start modding...

Well I'm goin to stay up resharching about the idle screw......

PS..Sorry guys I'm not in the mood to proofread and use grammer....I've been Through alot for one day....and haven't gotten newhere....I'm sure yous understand....thanks guys

by the way i have Bosch Platinum plugs with oem wires....i heard this is no good.... would this be bad for idle n timing?......just wondering?

if anyone still cares....

I found out what the problem is. Today i went to school and put it up on the lift...So i had my teacher try to find out what it was. After a few mins of looking around they said it was the flexplate... So we shut off the car looked at the flexplate....and its has a few cracks in it.. and a chip missing... its really bad. Its being help up by one bolt. So i think I'm goin to stop driving it for now.

Since its a AWD i sure whoever i take it to will bitc#@%. About how much do u think it will cost to take down n replace flexplate... I live in NJ if neone knows of a good place let me now....

I think I'm going to sell my SAFC that i got for my car. (still in the box if receipt) Since i need $ and don't even have $ for bigger injectors and turbo.. So if neone is looking for one let me know....ight thanks for all the help guys....

dude a couple things here:

1. Get rid of the bosch platinums. Get so NGK BPR6ES instead. Platinum = no no for turbo cars.
2. Run 10w30 oil. who told you to run 5w30?
3. Flexplate? is that like the heatsheild? or the flex section of your downpipe? either way, just take off the heat sheilds, and /or get a new pipe.

no flexplate......like flywheel but on A/T car.....i would think that means big bucks to fixs right?......

If you got it to wear you can look at it ,you should be able to change it you self.
But if not be prepared to spend about $800-$1000

It at the point where i could just see about a 1/3 of it at a time n i have to crank it to see the rest... I didn't take nething off....but my teachers said that there should be a cover there to protect anthing from hittin it..... I do have to take down the trans to change this right....I'm pretty sure.....

hey there that happen to me to so i have to take down the tranny and replace the flex plate it was kind of hard but i said what the heck i process to work on it. it took about 7-8 hours wow crazy !!

Hey it’s worth a shot
Is there anyone in New Jersey that would like to help a fellow DSM’er. (Not to mention a newbie) Under go this job, that would cost about $500 to fix at my dad’s shop. (not to mention I don’t have this $ and work after school so it would be hard to save $500) I would much rather have it fixed this way, so I could go step by step with the person and learn. ……let me know if anyone wants to help

O my god… could you really talk to your friend for me……I would highly appreciate that, because I am in dieing need of some help. I bought this car about a year and a half ago, and have been dieing to drive it… and now that I got my license I find out that the flexplate is broken, and that its going to cost $400 + to fix. Since I’m only 17 and don’t have a reliable job, I can hardly afford my insurance. ($3500 a year. Got to love New Jersey highest state) And now with this low blow from my flexplate. I think I’m going to have to take my car out of the policy.

I would love to be able to keep my car …because I have already spent so much $ on parts that I plan on putting on sometime in the future...

Some might ask “where are your parents in all this…why can’t they help you with the $”

Well the thing is that right now my parents have their own financial dilemmas, and can’t afford to help me.

Hey talondsm18g, What part of NJ you live in. I am willing to pay for everything… all parts, food, your favorite beer (if you drink) and favorite cigarettes (if you smoke).

So again anything that anyone can do to help me would be HIGHLY appreciated.

hey guys i was just thinkin...do you think that once i take down the trans ....i willl find out that i also need a new TORQUE CONVERTOR? Do they usally break when the flexplate goes?

Dude your insurance? man i am only paying 70 dollars a month right now. not on my car i have it listed on my dads name. my name is on a 88 s10. talk to your dad about switching to the Hartford Company. My dad went from state farm to hartford and saved himself 800 dollars almost. this probyl has nothing to do with your problem but hell it will save you some money. hope you get your problem fixed

I agree. Switch insurance companies or at least get that car under your dad's name and become the secondary driver. Best place to do this was State Farm for me. When I was 16 and got my license, I got a crappy car under my dad's name and after graduating college, I got it all transferred under my name and still got to keep a VERY good rate since I was a long term insurance holder. Check it out. $3500 for insurance is ridiculous (that's more than my 1g DSM). If you're able to knock off $500 from that, you can get someone to fix your problems.

true.....yea thats what i think i'm goin to do......I'm goin to call up some places to see what they tell me...
