i want to buy an EVO III 16g, does it make any sense to clip it or not? from what i heard the turbos are made so well now-a-days that its better just to leave it alone...anyone elses opinon?

:nono: save money for something else. its little better spol up but you lose power when you shift

Yeah, your better off saving your money. I did the 34mm flapper mod to mine instead. Gives it a different sound and makes it more efficient at lower boost levels.... by lower i mean 14-20 psi
i guess the e316g turbos shine between 17-24psi... or so ive been told by SBR.

alot of people will say that if you are considering clipping your turbo to get more power out of it you should just buy a bigger on in the first place.

I had a ported and clipped Big 16G and I don't really feel a power loss in between shifts but that's probobly because I'm only running wastegate pressuer cause I'm a nancy and am afraid I'm gonna break stuff. That's the way it was with my 95 GST anyways. There is definatly a power increase with porting it and it spools about 200rpm faster being clipped but it didn't cost me anything to get it done so that's why I did it. Don't really think its worth the money though.

Correct me if im wrong but doesnt clipping a turbo cause it to spool alittle slower? It's my understanding that clipping makes for less back pressure in the turbo so you have more top end not bottom end.

I'm not going to correct you because you're not wrong

Yeah, I don't know how some of you guys think clipping will result in faster spool when you remove surface area from the turbine wheel...

It results in slightly slower spool, but more top end.

cool...yeah i wasn't really conscerned about the money but thanks for looking out for me...haha, yeah i def. do know that it slows up your spooling but i was just seeing if it was really a loss of power if i didn't get it clipped

The 34mm flapper mod actually has nothing to do with the turbo being more or less efficient at lower boost. :dsm:

I have a P/C B16G and the spool up starts a 4k and pulls all the way to 7k. IMOP its not worth clipping because the turbo puts out more power down low. Leave it uncliped but get it ported with the 34mm flapper.

I dont think anyone flat out said it but clipping a 16g, big 16g, or the evo316g does not result in a significant gain in horsepower. There is a gain up top in the high rpm band but not significant and you lose some mid range hp. Clipping is for larger turbos to produce significant top end hp gains.

And to reiterate, spool up is slower (slightly) due to the smaller surface area on clipped turbine wheels, hence the slight loss in power at mid rpms. :thumb:

Who does turbine wheel clipping service and how much is it? I heard after the wheel is clipped it needs to be balanced then put back on. Sounds like a lot of labor. Anyone know how much it'll cost? Thanks.
