i was fianlly getting around to finishing up freshening up my jsm cyclone motor i pucked up for the galant and i was noticing when i was doing the balance shaft eliminator kit it has two bearing. the front and the rear balance shaft bearing. but my question is why do i even need the rear balance shaft bearing. it even says in the vfaq that it's not necessary to replace it. just the front to block of the oiler. can anybody give me some input on this?

I'm pretty sure that the bearing is fed oil by the bshaft itself. So it has no oil hole in it. There is nothing to block off. Dont let vfaq confuse you. Sometimes when they say "rear" bearing, they are referring to the bearing that is in the "rear" of the FRONT balance shaft. You are talking about the bearing for the back of the block, right?

That's exactly right. the rear balance shaft has no bearing to replace. it is oil feed through the shaft, I found it a bit confusing as well. the rear bearing they refer to is actually the 2nd bearing on the front balance shaft found deeper in the block. This was a major PITA for me to put the new one in and had to make an additional jig to put it back in. However if you've got the block out of the car it will be a million times easier to line it up and knock the new one in place (with the crankshaft out of the way).

Just a little suggestion on the parts. some of the kits out there have a solid stub while others have a groove on the stub. the groove helps feed oil to the gears on the oil pump. I put the one without the groove and have had no problems thusfar. however, had I not already bought the kit and been half way into it I would have looked for one with the groove. IMO the more oil that gets to your moving parts the better. I fact when I did it, I went to the mitsu dealer to buy just the stub but they didn't have one in stock, http://www.vfaq.com/mods/balance-shafts.html the stub is actually from a 1.8L Mirage.
