Will the SBR mani really help me out a lot?

Ok so im going to order a EVOIII 16G turbo, along w/ a walbro 255, 550 or 580cc injectors, AFPR, S-AFC, and install it into my 91 Laser FWD Turbo. My question is this.... My stock 1G mani is in very good condition, no cracks, etc, but I know of the reputation they have of cracking, so with the condition that my mani is in, will i really notice a big power diff by having this mani? If so then Ill buy one, but if not ill just port out the 1G mani and call it good. So whats your opinion on cost vs. benefit on this manifold if you dont have to replace it but want too.?

any type of manifold with larger runners and collector would provide a power increase in this situation. if you arent into taking risks i would say replace it with whatever your budget will fit. if you can find a 2g mainfold for very cheap in good condition then go with that and port it out

sbr manifold is going to match your ported evo16g turbo...
and its going to give you maximum airflow, and later on if youare going to get bigger turbo
you will need it. b16g is going to creeep and if you have sbr mani with extrnal flange + wastegate its going to save you from a lot of hustle ...

well i was thinking going w/ a Evo III w/ the upgraded 34mm WG flapper to help w/ boost creep. Forgot to add ive also got full 3" turbo back ex, 3" dejon intake pipe, 3"gm maf and maf translator. Overall im looking for 300 or so ish fwd hp w/out spending a shitload of loot. ill also be getting a fmic however just not sure on which one.

dude you will get bigger turbo sooner or later, and $50+ or something for 34mm flaper is going to be waste of money :toobad:

for FMIC, you can get core for $200 12x32x3 at ebya and its going to work fine, piping is not
going to be easy unless you can find good shop

$50 ??? i see most places have that mod for $125. i agree, waste of money, i bought a nice used small 16g for 200 w/o actuator, im going to weld the flapper shut, port my 2g mani, weld on external wastegate flange with tial 38mm which is $225. $100 more, that way you have that already when you wanna go bigger, and no boost creep at all ! :thumb:

Just find a 2g manifold if you can. 2g manifold is a fine manifold for a 16g.

It has gone 9's so i would think it can flow enough.
2g mani it would be fine ????? it will be better but sbr will be better again
:rocks:

The slowboy manifold may flow a little better but if you can find a good condition 2G manifold for 1/3 of the price that is the better route as you will barely be able to tell the difference between the two performance-wise from the driver's seat.

Im going to agree about the wastegate flapper is a waste. I have basically your setup but with a 2.5" exhuast and i have crazy boost creep up to 25 psi. Im wishing i had an ex. wastegate. And I would have to say go with the slowboy mani. Might as well do it right the first time instead of payin for somethin only to upgrade it later.

First of all, if you're going to be installing a new turbo, it would be ridiculous to not change out the 1G manifold. It might not have cracks now, but it will at some point. Imagine how bad you'll want to kick yourself for not doing it at all at the same time. The difference in flow from the 2G manifold to any other manifold is minor. Chances are, you won't feel the 2 or so extra horsepower. Other manifolds "might" help the turbo spool up a couple hundred RPM sooner, but that would be their biggest benefit.

If you're on a budget, at least get a 2G manifold used and have it ported - I repeat, do not keep your stock 1G manifold. If not, get the SBR manifold or another manifold that will help spool a little better. Do things right the first time around. Too many people do things half-assed. If you plan on holding on to that turbo for a while, get the flapper upgrade. I know it helped me with my old 16g. I don't know how emissions laws are there, but around here an external WG is a big tip-off for cops and emissions shops. There's no way you'd pass a visual inspection around here. Just something to keep in mind.

I'm seeing 200Hz or so more airflow with SBR manifold than a 2G manifold.

Also you said that if you would keep the 1g mani then you would port it. :nono: Bad idea, lets see mani that is known for cracking and then take more material off it so that it is not as thick . not going to be pretty in the end, your best bang for the buck if you plan to keep your 16g and maybe only up to a 18g would be the 2g mani
But best for the future if you have a lil $$ now would be a SBR mani for extrernal gate get the tial one and boost on til you get bored and want something bigger, like say a gt30r? or maybe see a green or red in your future, sorry maybe mine..

^^^ I agree 110%. Manifold mounted external WG is the way to go. :thumb:

project_tsi and I do not have emisions testing in this part of Michigan. So external WG's and running w/o cats are something we can easily get away with.

Why would it be a waste of money if you go bigger? New turbo means the flapper goes with it, then you can go E-WG. In the meantime if he's not ready for 23psi+, the flapper will control creep.

thanks for the help guys. Heres the rundown. I called up SBR to talk to them about it and it turns out they had 5 left, and thats it and they will then be on back order till june, so I was like F' it, and ordered it cus I know i wanted one either way and I either had to order it now, or wait till june, and I dont wanna do that. But the only ones they had left were pre-stage 2 ported and not flanged for ex. WG. on the phone cragger said the evo 3 turbo w/ 34mm flapper WILL creep up to about 21 psi then drop and settle at about 18psi. I gave him my current list of mods and he said I should be fine w/ that as long as i have supporting mods for fuel system and tuning, which i knew anyways. So now that i know its gonna creep a bit, should i order 650cc injectors to compensate when it does creep up there? i dont wanna be running 550's to the max! other than my mods listed before the engines head and block are stock, but given the supporting fuel mods cragger says ill be fine. He also said if needed, as long as i know a good welder, the mani is still able to be modded for the ex. WG. So i guess what ill do is set the turbo to 15-17psi and let her creep from there. Well theres my thoughts on it, any thing else youd like to say is still greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dan

Go with the 650's, they give you a little room to play with compared to the 550's. I think you'll be happy with the SBR mani. Lots of people have posted saying you won't notice much compared to the 2g mani. Well obviously it will depend on your setup but these guys obviously haven't seen how much larger the sbr mani is. Even a ported 2g mani is tiny in comparison. I'm not saying that you can't go fast with the 2g, I'm just saying the sbr is alot larger all the way around :thumb:

I wouldnt trust most welders to weld stainless to cast. SBR has done it many times and they are very good at it. If you request, they will flange the manifold for an additional $50 or so. I would definatily recommend you have them flange it before they ship it off to you. :dsm:
