Hey!! I wanna know what your dream turbo kit is. I have to do some research, and it is related to DSMs, so I thought I would stop on over and get some info!

If you could have a kit with a ball bearing turbo, polished SS manifold and O2 eliminator DP, and all lines and fittings, with external wastegate and dumptube...would this be cool?

How much would you be willing to pay for a top quality kit? How much for a mediocre kit?

What else would you like to see on your dream kit? Heat shields? Extra bracing?

Thank you all so much for your info!!!!!

Chris

by top quality...I mean a manifold like this:

How thick is the tubing on the manifold? Warranty? Stainless turbo manifolds crack like crazy, that whole silly thermal expansion rate thing.

That manifold look's great, thanks again for stopping by;). What turbo are you considering, for you're dsm system. I am very excited about something like this. I understand you have been building turbo systems for the mr2 community for some time. its time for a *complete* turbo system to be available to the dsm community.Any additional info you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Hello!! Thanks for the support! The turbo some of my friends plan on using is the GT25R. I personally do not own a DSM, I own an MR2, and will be using the GT30 kit on my hybrid 5s-gte (5sfe bottom end with 3sgte head).

As far as the whole cracking deal, someone who has owned that style manifold for 18 months, and ran it daily through 2 entire seasons (racing seasons) and has not had one single problem. Another fellow MR2 owner put down a little over 300rwhp at just 10psi. It was wicked!!

And I do agree jdmawd. There should be a complete bolt on turbo kit available for the DSM. One with aeroquip stainless lines and fittings...oil and water! If something was available to you guys with everything you needed...lines, fittings, manifold, DP, the TURBO, and an external wastegate, would that be sweet or what?!

Please give me more advice for my market research project!
Thank you all!!

Chris

Also...I'm just a body guy. I built a show MR2 over the past 2 years...and have gotten to be friends with the owners of extremeboost, and told them I could do some market research for them to help decide what kit they should build next. So any and all of your input will be greatly appreciated and fully considered in my writeup!

Also, how much would you guys be willing to spend for a kit that would come as complete as something i mentioned in the previous post?

You'll find that it will be hard to find a turbo that fits for everyone. A lot of people seem to think that the 20G is a big turbo to use on the street. If you're actually considering this you may want to consider a small turbo kit and a large turbo kit. Personally I plan on running something in the Green/Etc range for daily driving.

oh...the MR2 guys are using a 20G all the time on the street. While I realize its a TDO6 and you'rs may be a TD05, there could be quite a difference. I do know, however, that we both share 2.0 liter turbos. And the GT30 is a quick spooling turbo on the MR2. Hitting full boost around 3600 or something obscene. The GT25R is even quicker from what I understand.

Well, I own both an eclipse and an mr2 turbo. I run a 20g on the eclipse, and took the stock mr2 turbo. and polished and clipped it, the eclipse is a little ruff in traffic. Thinking about the greddy 18G.

I think a DSM turbo kit should be some sort of garret hybrid. A turbo kit with a mitsubishi turbo would make little sense because well to bolt on a mitsubishi turbo all you need is an OEM manifold. Now when you go with the garret then things gets interesting and sometimes a BIG hassle. First you get the turbo, then you gotta get the manifold, then there's the o2 housing and the downpipe issue. On a situation like that a turbo kit that would include everything from the turbo to all the necessary fittings and even an intercooler with pipes would be nice but very pricey but then again you spend just as much if not more buying everything separately.

Let's break it down:
descent garret t3/t4 $1500
exhaust manifold $450
o2 housing $200
external wastegate $400
BOV $250
misc items like fittings and oil and water lines $100
intercooler kit $900-$1500

Grand total $3800-$4400 give or take some.

You price the kit somewhere around $3500-$4000 and it will be very attractive to buyers, just the piece of mind that it comes with EVERYTHING you need it's a big bonus. Sure you could include an inline fuel pump or AFPR just to make the kit more "safe".

agreed, when you guys finish up the design and r&d end of you're dsm kit PLEASE shoot me an email. [email protected] i want to be one of the first with a *complete* Garrett ball bearing turbo, tubular manifold and down pipe system on my dsm. if you guys are serious, i would be willing to put down a deposit right now. or you guys can use my car, for r&d if you need a dsm:D

JDMAWD....Thank you for your support in this! There are actually a few others (locals) that have expressed an interest in this kit as well, so I have taken the notes to the fabricator of the kit, so he can take his next step, and I will let you know what it will be.

The only problem with a kit is most people can't afford to do all of this at once. As far as I know most people buy things as they get money that way there car can have some mods while they are waiting for the big step to a new turbo. I'm not saying nobody will buy a kit but I think it will be harder to sell a kit at that price. For beginners to modding it's also not a good idea to do a bunch of mods at once. Good luck with your kit though who knows they might go like hot cakes.

want to guess what a similar *complete* system for a supra/rx7 cost's:) would you believe RPS Greddy and HKS have no problem selling there *complete* turbo kits to supra/rxy enthusiasts? i would tell you why, but it would probably start a huge flame war so i will pass.

Only problem with that is if you can afford a supra or an RX-7 then you can probably afford to spend more on upgrades. That's my opinion. Go ahead and flame I'm a good sport I won't report you to the moderators.:D

Actually you'll find many supra owner's stay at "bpu" because it is not cheap to upgrade a mkiv or FD. A typical HKS turbo kit will run you 4-10k's. As for greddy kits usually are around 3-5k's. Then you will get into turbo companies like RPS or Sound Performance and the price is all up to you then. I'd be more than willing to shell out the money for a garret turbo kit.

That's true for every group. We are comparing those who actually spend money on there car's. that want to go extremely fast. not you're average ricer, with a wing and down pipe. In every car enthusiast group there is a smaller portion that takes moding a step further, then the average. look at this site for example out of 7000+ members how many actually have big setups. maybe 10%, and thats pushing it. it not a put down, im just trying to make an example. when you make general statements like most and many.
