Can someone show me where the breather filter goes and what it actually does? I am looking at getting one but I don't know what it does. Is the install hard? I have a injen intake on a 2g GST that I am going to install at the same time. Is there a new hose that i have to get or something to plug up on the intake? Thanks in advance for your help!!!

Ian

Thanks for the pic. Do I need to get anything for the install or will a hose clamp and the breather filter be it?

By the way I found the links on your web page helpful. I found some good prices on things I was looking for.

if its gonna be vented to the atmosphere the hose clamp and breather filter should be it. if you have emissions testing there its NOT legal to do it that way ..heres one that doesent vent.. very cheap too :) http://www.tgilmore.com/talon/catchcan.html thanks for the comments on my page, i plan on adding every dsm (turbo) related link i can think of.

oh and in regards to you plugging up the intake.. yeah youll need a vacuum cap to do that if youre venting it to the atmosphere.. i say dont go buy vacuum caps though.. take a bit of the vacuum hose you took off. cut it maybe 2", and put a screw tightly in the end of it.. hehe free vacuum caps :)

This is the one I have-- it's just a fuel filter placed inline onto the crankcase vent hose. This one is, of course, completely reversible, but the "real" catch can probably is too. I've heard that a popular place to mount it is to one of the BOV bolts.

the catch can is bolted to the BOV flange. you can see a piece of flat metal coming out behind the catch can and hitting the drivers side most bolt on the BOV.

That catch can is the RRE version.

Just a suggestion!, doing just the k&n filter, WILL make a MESS on your engine. I took mine off and just ran a hose down past the trans to vent on the ground. Maintenance free is the key! and the others will need to be emptied every now and then.......but are nice to have.

Hey all! I was browsing when I came across this article...Excellent idea! Never thought of a fuel filter as a catch can. Since the turbo is off the car I suppose it's the best opportunity to clean it up.

I am probably stating the obvious, but make sure you plug where the VC hose enters the turbo intake. Also if you go with a drip line, or use a fuel filter for the catch can, I have mine just hanging down behind the intake manifold with the original hose, you may notice the smell of oil at times.

Question for the filter guys, do you ever get oil spray through the filter onto the engine compartment?

Thanks

If, by "filter guys" you mean the fuel filter catch can guys, then no, not if you use it in-line and keep the hose plugged back into the intake. I think that's the best way-- I don't see any reason to just run an open filter and not reroute it back into the intake like stock.
