I'm currently removing the head on my car. I have a few questions:

- I am having trouble taking the intake manifold off from the head. I simply cannot get access to the lower bolts holding the intake manifold on to the head. My question is, can i reomve the head with the intake manifold connected, and then later disconnect the intake manifold from the head? Or, is there some way that I can gain access to these lower bolts?

- Do I need to take the motor mount(s) off in order to remove the head?

You can remove the head with the intake manifold, and exhaust manifold still connected. the only motor mount you have to unbolt is the one located by the timing gears.

save your self the time and leave it on there till you have the head out it is imense;ly easier to take off once the head is removed from the car. it is also easier to put it back on as well i am getting ready to put my head back in. a word of advice thought if you are have head work done by a shop make sure they don't not take you exaust manifold studs out or that they put them back in. don't not have it left up to you.

Well Skybound.....if we could read what the hell you wrote that might be helpful.

Make sure you take the bracket off that all the vacuum lines connect to. That attaches to the head and the back of the block.

Ok, let's try this again. ;) Leave the intake, the exhaust manifold (you can easily take this off though) + fuel rail attached to their various points on the head. Reach under/behind the intake manifold and with a 14mm socket, loosen the 2 bolts that attach the intake manifold to the stay. You should then be able to lift the whole thing out AFTER disconnecting ALL wiring from their respective sensors plus removal of the throttle cable. :thumb:

The motor mount by the timing belt has to come off. Jack the car up and support it with jackstands. Get a small piece of wood and use it as leverage to jack the motor by the oil pan. You must use a piece of wood to evenly support the weight of the motor to avoid denting the oil pan. You should then be able to easily remove the motor mount. There should be 2 nuts towards the front of the car (14mm,) 2 long bolts on the drivers side (14mm) and a huge bolt that goes through the actual mount with a 17mm nut towards the rear and 2 14mm nuts towards the front.

Remember to break the water pump pulley bolts (4 of them - 10mm) loose before dropping the alternator/AC belt and everything else should be straight foward. :thumb:

Alright. Thanks guys.

When I support the oil pan with a piece of wood, do I use the piece of wood as a weight distributor? What I mean is, do I put the piece of wood in between the jack and the oil pan. If this is what I do, how far up do I jack it? Just enough to touch and support the oil pan? Sorry for minor details, but I want to make sure.

Yes, you put the wood inbetween the jack and the pan, to distribute the weight and not dent the pan. As far as jacking it up, you are using it as a means to kinda replace the motor mount, so you dont need to go crazy by any means.

Yes, remember the reason why you are jacking the motor by the oil pan is to alleviate the weight exerted on the mount so you can easily take it off. There are 3 other mounts so Yes! you can temporarily take the jack off to use it after removing the mount. :thumb:

off topic question, if you were to put the head back on and use arp head studs , how much torque has to be applied? 85 lbs?

well basically you follow the instructions that come with the arps. They'll have a spec for using arp moly lube and another spec for using motor oil on the threads. I know motor oil was higher but I don't remember the exact numbers.

Yes, you will have to remove the pulleys. The 2 pulleys bolted to the water pump (held on w/ 4-10mm bolts) that the power steering and alternator belts route to and the main crankshaft pulley (4-12 or 14mm bolts). You gotta remove the motor mount on that side too. Take the cooling fan on the drivers side out to get at the alternator easier too. :talon: :thumb:
