Hey guys. I've got a 92 gst and the problem is my check engin light is turning on. I'm going to try and take care of that soon, but in the mean time I have 2 questions.

1. How is the car "de-tuned" when the check engine light comes on? (ie is boost limited, timing retarded ect?)
2. About how much power is lost when the light is on? A percentage would be nice.

I've tried serching around for the awnser but failed to find anything. Thanks guys.

There is no magical answer to your question. The 'CEL' is there to tell you something doesn;t match factory specifications. The problem may or may not affect performance. It all depends on what the ecu thinks is wrong. For instance a probablem with the Fuel Pressure Solenoid will not affect the running performance of the engine at all yet it will definitely pop a CEL.

Ah ok, thanks. I was under the impression that when the CE light is triggered, the engin runs in a 'fail-safe' mode that automatically lowers performance of the engin. Anyway, thanks for clearing that up.

Yah...I don't think that is how DSM computers work.

I do know that the Subaru WRX has that feature>>>if a check engine light is triggered for any reason(using stock ecu)...then the engine goes into limp mode...where every time you go into boost...the ecu retards timing back..it sucks BAD! but is good for if a real problem came up.
