okay so heres the deal... I have a 6 bolt that i am rebuilding jsut about everything on. SO far i have a new 3 layer HG, arp head studs, main bearings, rod bearings, oil pump, water pump, previous owner allready did head work and the timing belt. SO my question is the following:

How much are OEM rings or a combo of rings and pistons. I dont want to drop too much. I want to keep the bore stock. Also i am keeping the stock rods. My main question is do i really need upgraded pistons for what my goals are?

So far i have a big 16g, FMIC, 1g BOV, 2.5 tubular 02, DP, high flow cat, 3'' catback, 680 cc injectors, walbro 255 FP, dsmlink soon to come for tuning, 1g head, intake manifold, TB, 2g exhaust manifold, NGK wires.

How much boost should i run with this set up and i am looking to run low 12's. What would recomend for the piston/rings. Can the stock OEM handle this? THanks.

Chris

Well for what your looking to do, I would go with stock 2g pistons. It will be good enough, plus you get your 8.5 to 1 compression ratio. As far as boost, that depends on your tuning ability. 18 to 20 psi should do you well, but only after you properly brake in the the motor. Use regular 10w30 oil, no synthetic!!! And try to keep off the high boost until broken in. Make sure you change you oil at 500, 1000 and 2000 miles on new motor. Then do a regular oil change 2500 miles after that. Once you get to about 700o miles on motor, then you should be good to have some fun alittle. You should be good to turn up the boost and have fun! I hope this helps. As far as piston rings, 2g rings should be good enough. If you plan to go bigger(turbo), then go for an after market set up. Good luck! :thumb:

but dont you have tomachien the rods or w/e to fit the 2g pistons? How much does that cost?

Chris

not much at all. go to your trusted local machine shop and get it done. you will have to open up where the rod goes into the piston, and use the 1g wrist pin.

If your looking to do a stock rebuild, check a machine shop around you. I paid 350 for pistons, rings, all bearings, and gaskets. This is for a stock bottom end and you can do 12's on a stock bottom end w/o having to worry too much about breaking something.

I am currently in the process of a rebuild on a 6bolt for my 91 AWD.. i live near john shepherd and have had him rebuild my tranny as well as a valve job and block machining.. I am going completely stock, minus ARP studs and bolts everywhere and a B/S elimination, for my bottom end as per shepherds reccomendation... i mentioned the 2g pistons to him to see what his thoughts were on this and he said "I ran 10's on the stock pistons and rings..." so that was good enough for me.. also he mentioned that its almost more of a pain than it is worth to set up the 1G rods with the 2G pistons... my car should be ready to start in a week or two as i have finally got all of my parts... my plan for now is to run stock boost till she is broken in.. maybe by the end of summer start hitting her hard.. ultimately looking for low 12's as the shepherd tranny and fresh rebuild should be good for that reliably... i believe shepherd is now running a forged piston ross i think?? could be wrong..

whatever you do, dont cheap out and buy aftermarket stock pistons and rings, like Topline pistons or ITM. they are crap coming from experience. i dont remember how much my mitsubishi rings cost...i think it was around 144ish.
