Do a compression test first... if the compression is anything less than pefect, then rebuild it. Otherwise, if your Engines healthy, throw a turbo on that baby.

lets look at this realistically. For that thing to make any power the engine will need to be built up anyways and why install the turbo kit twice? Also 100k miles might still have good compression but for how much longer? Do you really want to take it apart and rebuild it again 2 years down the road? These parts do all have 100k miles on them and are much more prone to break then say ... a brand new built engine? ( assuming its built properly )
 
I bought my 91 gsx with 130,000 on it.. Melted part of the cylinder dome on the head and coolant poured into the #1 cylinder.. Just get it rebuilt while it's still running. :thumb:
 
Most performance shops do not recommend any type of forced induction system(including nitrous) to be put on a motor over 50K miles reguarless of its condition. I believe it should be considered on an individual basis depending on the level of performance you are trying to achieve.

If you plan to run high boost(20+psi) and are going to pay for a professional installation and/or tune, I would build the motor first. If you have no experiance tuning and plan to tune the car yourself, I would suggest practicing on what is current shortblock.

My solution would be, install the kit, necessary upgrades and run a safe, low boost level(10psi or less). Find a deal on a used 420A and get it built, then do a motor swap and other desired/requried upgrades(cams, clutch, etc) at the same time. This way you can enjoy increased performance and slowly work your way to building a monster without having to dump alot of cash all at once.

You would call 10 psi safe for a stock 420? I don't know them very well but it seems a little high to me to consider it safe and low.

I'm saying 10psi maximum. 5-8 psi would probaly be ideal. I am not a 420A expert either but based on turbo/supercharger kits that are sold for them and other N/A applications it seems reasonable. Most complete(everything you need) bolt-on kits are designed for use with the factory bottom end in mind. Most companies offer several levels of performance, that way they can sell a base kit to someone with a small budget that wants just a little extra or satisfy the next Brian Spilner.
 
Well thanks everybody for the info and opinions. I am an old minitruck builder and I am starting to get this speed bite from buying an Eclipse, even though it is not turbo it is fun to drive. I find myself wanting to go just a bit more faster everyday but dont know a bunch about building up a import motor.

Well an american-made motor, actually.

Yeah man, if you go read in the non turbo tech section, there are people here that have done it.

Personally, I like the idea of what he said up there, to go for it, then worry about the rebuild later. I mean if you rebuild it first, that means it's alot longer until you get to turbo it.

Does it smoke? What is your compression? Use any oil?

I'm suprised you haven't told us any of these things.

Just be careful with the boost, I think 10 is kinda high (but the other people here in Non turbo tech can help guide you in, there are some that have turbo's their cars and will be happy to help you ).

I think either a 14B or a T25 would be good.
