Drove for about 2 miles normally. Then noticed my temp gauge was almost at "H." It was pretty scary I immediatly pulled over and let it cool down. When I popped the hood the coolant resivior was bubbling inside it was so hot. There was no way I was gonna open it. I let it cool down put some antifreez in there and barely made it home. I have no idea why this happened, or what caused it some help would be great! Thanks

Stuff dosent happen just for no reason, start trouble shooting, i would look at the thermostat first. good luck

You should run down the checklist:
Check for broken hoses, (even the small heater hoses going to the throttle body)
cracks in the radiator end tanks or fins,
thermostat,
radiator cap

If you haven't already done so, you should replace your radiator cap regardless.
That's a common culprit.

swap the thermostat to an OEM rated 170*. dont pay someone to do it either [ i did  ].

it's 3 bolts to replace. 1 wormscrew clamp to take of the lower radiator hose, then 2 12mm bolts to take off the thermostat housing neck. pull out, put in.

then after that check your waterpump.

Yes, sound like the thermostat "sticking close" not allowing the coolant to circulate through the radiator to be cooled.

I removed mine completely. It take a bit longer for the car to warmup but she runs cool as ice.

While you replacing the thermostat flush the radiator. This should be done once a year.

Also you can do the TB coolant bypass mod.

DON'T DRIVE THE CAR WITH THE WATER TEMP NEEDLE POINTING AT H.

No need to remove the lower radiator hose. Leave that one on. If I remember correctly you don't even need to remove the top one.

You dont WANT the car to run cool as ice. There is a specific operating temp it is designed for, hence the t-stat.

Ok so i should get an OEM rated thermostat from mitsubishi, or can I go somewhere else to get one. Also I should get an OEM 170 Rated Thermostat. And where exactly is it locted on a 95 Eclipse?thanks

Acctually its not that your car is running cool. Your acctually overheating your motor and you don't even know it. The thermostat is there to slow down the coolants flow though the engine. WHen it passes though the head so fast it doesn't stand long enough to draw the heat away from the different areas of the motor hense the reason why your car appears to be running so cool, cause the heat is not getting out of the engine into the water.

You need to be putting the thermostat back in your car, what your doing is a really bad idea. If you think I'm nuts ask some guys running two stroke water cooled motors or anybody who races and tried that way back in the day.

[parts locating crash course]
start by locating your radiator, then locate the lower radiator hose [ bottom of radiator ]. this hose leads up to a cast housing that is bolted on the bottom left corner of the motor [ when you're facing towards the car ]. the radiator hose is held on by a wormscrew clamp at the "neck" of your thermostat housing. on that SAME piece, there are two 12 or 14mm [ i forget which ] bolts that you will have to remove to take off this "neck". once you take off the neck, take a look at the piece still attached to the car; there should be a metal circular thing in there, that's the thermostat. pull it out. :thumb:

I loosened the 2 bolts off but it looks like there is a ton of antifreez about to come gushing out what do i do now, i tightened them back up. help me out

coolant probly wont gush until u pull the thermostat out so proceed as planned

woops my bad read the reply wrong just catch the coolant with something clean and put it back in afterwards or buy some new coolant probly needs to be changed anyway

Headgasket may be shot also. Check compression numbers.

I had a thermostat stuck shut on me once. Dont know why it did, it was brand new too. I put it in a pot and water and put it on the stove. When the temp of the water gets high, you'll see the spring in the thermostat start to open. Except on mine, it just sat there and did nothing.

Just pull off the thermostat housing (2 botls), get some rtv to make sure it doesn't leak, and change it. Most likely thats your problem. Make sure there is enough coolant in there so it doesn't overheat again.

Pour antifreeze directly into the radiator cap and start the car and put some more in. You'll be fine. :thumb:
