Ive long needed cams to take full advantage of my set up and with all the talk of Forced Performances new comp grinds i decided to order a set. They came within a week and were well packaged. The total with shipping came out to $478. They really came with no indication of anything from FP except for a polished portion of the cam where a serial was engraved. (pic1)
My install went as any other cam install. Pretty basic if youve done any motor work to the 4g63 before. I had no issues getting the timing marks to align properly and no my head has never been milled either. The dowel pin for the exhaust cam when i put the sprocket on stuck out way to high not allowing the bolt to come down tight to the gear.(pic2) To my dissapointment with comps quality control i used a hammer as much as i didnt want to and lightly tapped the dowel pin in and that took care of that.
After finding the dowl pin so far out i started to wonder what else comp inspection had missed. I got out the 1-2 mic and started checking the lobes. The total height variation was from 1.4105 to 1.4085. Apparently they held the machining to a +/- 0.001 tolerance After then mic'ing the stocker i came up with a tolerance of +/- 0.0007 and an average of 1.3977 for a comparison. The comps did hold up for lobe variation with tight tolerances. The journals were without a question perfect and held up to the specs 1.0220 with a couple tenths variation.
Once again reassured with comps quality i installed the cams. The timing marks came up perfect without any issues. My after starting it up there was a definate change in idle. Its definatly obvious to the trained ear that the motor has cams. I lost about 3-4 inHG of vac and is now at 16-17inHG. Idle is slightly loopy at 800rpms but is probably also amplified from having ISC and FIAV removed. The exhaust is at a much lower note now also.
Intial run i was very impressed. It felt like the first time this motor has ever woken up in its 7,000 mile life. This was a much needed upgrade for me and once again opened up my power band. The pull is much harder and constantly increasing to redline. Im very happy with the money spent and made a night and day difference. Its undeniable how much faster the car is. worth the slight decress in idle. For anyone who knows dsmlink i went from 2.38 g/rev earlier that day to a max of 2.60 g/rev after the cams at 20 psi.
