Engine Swap? Worth it?

I have a 1994 Eagle Talon with the 4637 1.8 SOHC Engine. The car is in emaculate condition, but the engine is getting tired. The car has 155,000 miles on the original engine and i am starting to experience a ticking noise and smoke (valve stem seals) The clutch and tranny are great though.

My question is this: Can i swap my engine to a 4G63 turbocharged and what all would i need? i have decent knowledge enough to perform a swap, but have been unable to find anyone who has actually done it. Could it be because it is a bad idea and i am foolish for thinkin this through?

Could it be as simple as an engine, the hardware, and the turbo ECU, to be swapped in?

I did read about the swap somewhere, either on vfaq or dsm.org, but it was very vague.

Bottom Line is I love the car and love to tinker, so doing the work is not a problem, but do you think its worth it?

Thanks guys for yor feedback!!
P.S if the swap is not recomended then the baby 4G37 will go on to break 200,000 until i find the appropriate DSM!

the swap will work easally. you just need the ECU and other wireing harnesses. also the intercooler and plumbing for it. if your transmission is going up in its years and miles and/or is not a reliable performer you might want to check on replacing that in the near future.(especialy if it is an automatic)

the blocks are the same, just destroked, head bolt holes are the same etc.. you may also need cv shafts and hubs

I just did some more research about this swap. This is what I found.

If you know nothing about these cars, chances are you are probably going to spend more on the conversion then you spent on your car. The labor is going to KILL you, this is a very long and tedious process. Guys who tried to do it took a couple of weeks to months.

Here is something I found..,

"motor
ehxt manifold
I think the intake is different.
sensors. and possable harness
ALL MOTOR MOUNTS AND TRANY MOUNTS
Trany
Brackets
bolts
shifter and linkages
flywheel
clutch fork
flucrum
Possable salve and master ( not sure )
injectors ( not sure but I don't think they are the same)
T belt and all parts. ( wouldn't do all of this with a old T belt.

I am sure there are more but this is just off the top ofg my head, All in all only worth it if you have a whole car to pull parts from. the little things will kill you and then also remember that some of the parts from the wrecked car might not be good like motor mounts, And also this is just a 2.0 swap not a 2.0 turbo motor swap. All in all I don't see the worth of it and will only be a can of worms that you will be sorry that you opened. In short unless you building a race car this isn't worth it. You can get a AWD or FWD turbo car for less money and it's done right to start."

"to many changes in the modles to make this a effective swap unless you have a whole car to pull parts from. Things like ECU. Injectors, all the little emitions BS and so on is the killer part. I have some one that had a car just like what you want to do. The car is a total mess and really has some funny problems. it's very hard to deal with since the car is mix mached and all differnt then factory. All in all the only way this can be done in a effictive way is to swap to a 2.0 NON TURBO motor ( the turbo swap will not be worth the problems unless you building a race car and we are not talking street race car real race car ) and have a whole wrecked car to pull parts from

I wish you the best of luck but it would be cheaper, faster, less problems and a al oaround faster deal to just buy another car."

I have a 94 Eclipse GS with the 1.8 and im swapping in the 4g63T because thats my only choice...save on insurance and a sleeper wont bother me along with knowing your engine afterwards...for the swap you are gonna need everything under the hood for the swap youll also have to slap another engine mount, including the turbo gauge cluster obviously, so please find someone with experience, im lucky and i have a guy and town that knows his DSM's pretty damn well and can fabricate ANYTHING...Im sure it can be time consuming but its gonna be well worth it and fun you just need to know what your doing...hmmm 92HP with little mods or 200HP with potential?
Ill be starting the swap in about 2 weeks
