Can I swap the valves and guides from a 2g head into a 1g head? My 1g head valves are leaking but the 2gs are sealing perfect and are like brand new still. Can I just swap the valves and guides into a bare 1g head I have?

According to the overhaul manual once the valve guides have been pressed out you need to replace them with an oversized guide. It cautions you not to install the same sized guide again.

Yeah...I had a machine shop replace my valve guides, they used the same size guide, and 1500 mile later I was out a car. Make sure you have a competent machine shop install the correct over-sized valve guides!

alright thanks for the heads up. I'm going to call my shop tomorrow and tell him I wanna bring my new head by so he can look at it. I'll let you know what he says about the oversizing thing.

Yes, you can swap everything over...
You must not have been reading. You can not pull the valve guides out of one head and put them in another. You need to have the head machined or reamed to the next oversize guide and press the new ones in.

I would never reuse guides regardless of wether or not they would fit. Its not worth the cost of the labor to risk used parts. Same for valve guide seals. Seals are 20 bucks anyway. Valves, springs, retainers, locks, rockers, lifters, cams, etc are all interchangeable.

I called my machine shop today and he is taking a look tomorrow. I got a whole new 1g head ( bare head ) and he's putting in 1mm oversized stainless valves, decking it, installing my crower springs and retainers, and putting in new valve seals. He said he'll take a look at the guides in this head and let me know if they need to be replaced. He said guides were kinda expensive ( $3.50 each ... but $10 labor each to install ) ... he's gonna let me know whether to replace them or not. Thanks. :thumb:
