Well, most of my summer has been occupied with my new AWD project car. I've been tuning and modding my 1990 FWD Talon for a couple of years now. But I suffered severe traction issues at the track and could only pull off low 14 sec passes in a a car that was much faster. I was looking into new rubber and an LSD when I came upon a AWD car in need of TLC. I wanted to post a description and pics of my AWD project car on a budget to see what you guys think. Because I know many of DSM tuners here suffer from financial issues due to higher education. (college :thumbdown )

Sorry, getting lengthy. But here it goes. I would really like some of your input on what I did wrong, right, or any comments. And I am open to some good flames too.

Initial car investment: $800
(burned up valves and very bad compressioin, 20 psi/ decent body with bad paint/ decent drivetrain)

Bottom and top end gasket set, piston rings, timing belt+ pulleys, balence shaft belt, water pump-new: $475

Head rebuild: New valves, guides, and valve job, hot tank, and decked. $280

ARP studs: $100

Paint job: (I paint in a body shop, so only costs were materials)

Budget fell short of money for a clutch, but the car only has 20,000 miles a new oem clutch.

There might be a few costs I forgot, but I talley is right at $1655

Check out my pics.

Here is the car when I baught it, and some rebuild pics. Pretty sad looking 1G.

But there is nothing better looking then a freshly rebuild 4g63 head.

And here are some pics of my Talon with a refreshed 6 bolt and fresh coat of paint. :thumb:

What do you guys think ? I think some lowering springs would make it look much more aggressive.

I did steal all the goodies from my FWD car which were not included in my $1655 total budget, so I did cheat a little bit. I stoal my other car's small 16g, MAF Translater, and gained a FMIC during the rebuild process.

I was going to say it looked like you have a little more than $1600 just in wheels, tires and FMIC.

Yeah, my $1655 total was basically what it took me to build a strong base car to start modding. Which I still feel is a very reasonable amount of money. Many people start spending money modding a car that has deeper problems and have poor results from their modifying. I have probably swapped over $2000 worth of goodies from my FWD car. And my big money saver was doing all my own labor, even body work and painting.

Thanks for the comments guys. I'll take some better final pics when stops raining and hailing outside.

shit man...fix my car's body next...granted the huge dent in the fender, faded black paint, and random hole in the rear bumper add to the "sleeper" effect ;)

nice car though man :thumb:

I agree on that one. :thumb:

why the hell is this in advanced 4g63t tech?

pretty paint btw.

Here are some more complete pictures.

Yeah, sorry about this being in the wrong forum. I was trying to discuss a low budget 4g63 AWD build up, but it kind of turned into a non-performance thread. Which is still cool.
Anyone know how to forward this thread to the non-performance forum ?

You said that you had really bad compression. When you put new piston rings on the pistons did you hone the cylinders or anything like that? Just curious.
