ok, i was reading about removing the noise reduction filter to get more HP and better air flow and to make the turbo louder n so on blah blah right. i am new to the dsm i just got my 92 GS t like 3 weeks ago and i am just wanting to find all i can do to it fo rnow till i get money to put into it in parts and i heard about removing this but i was wondering is that a good idea or will that set off the ECU or whatever saying theres a problem without it. my friend said it would but he don't realy know **** either. but if i can remove it can someoen point me in the direction of removing it or what it looks like i know it's in teh Air cleaner and i looked in my Shop Manual and no metnioning of the filter was even in it so i don't even know what it looks like TO remove it but yeah if I did would it **** my car up or what????

Let me warn you now,I wouldnt do it.
I heard that with first gen you can but I did it on my second gen (95) and it was a nightmare...I pulled it out when I got my K & N intake (the first thing you should get) and when I started my car it was running like a pile of crap!!!I put 3 of the four pieces back in and the fourth piece was ruined from taking it out so I went to buy a piece and mitsu dealer said you have to buy a whole new MAS!!!!!So dont do it unless you want a sloppyer than sloppy idle!

Ive heard its different on 1g's but I thinks its point less once you see the piece you'll see theres more airspace then restriction.It looks like a honey comb.Once I got that straight I drove my gsx with the new K & N kit and shhhhhhhhhhh pisssssssssst it got twice as loud as it was.I can now hear my turbo and so can the hondas next to me........I mean behind!!!!!!!

I hope this helped
Tom

Thank you, that actualy helped me out ALOT. cause i was debating on removing that or just saying **** it and not playin around with it at all and just goin and getting a K&N and that pretty much jus tmade my mind up on wha ti'm doing. i'm just leavin it along and gettin the filter..Thank you

ARGGHHGHGHG.

The 1G and 2G intake systems are very much different. You cannot compare the two. The 1G is a lot more forgiving than the 2G. On top of that, He is talking about the air can silencer NOT the honeycombs.

let me repeat that.

After that you will have a great headstart on mods and what to do and not to do.

As far as removing the air can silencer: 10 Frequently asked Questions

and I will add this.

when you have the air can out, and on your bench, open it up. Then carefully remove the mass airflow sensor. It is attached by several small Phillips head screws from the turbo side. you also have to remove the 2 screws holding the electrical connection on. then GENTLY remove the cork gasket. after that you can just remove the noise restrictor very easily and put it back in if you so desire. Some of the guides I have seen reccomend destroying the little filter to get it out, but it is much easier if you just remove the MAF.

Remember, be careful, especially with the MAF and the cork gasket.

Oh and don't play with the honeycomb. it will cause you alot more problems than it is worth, especially if you are not going too wild with the mods.

Another thing I noticed is that the snorkel opening is the same size as the aircan outlet(turbo side) so removing it will not free up any more air. As well, there is an article that states that the increase in tempurature is not worth any gains that you might achieve by cutting this snorkel off. The article was by a guy that tested air temps at the throttle body while the car was being driven and under high boost. The tempurature was ALOT lower with the stock aircan and snorkel in place.

Just my 2 cents, but it seems to be accurate for mildly modded motors...
