Ok i just switched to the infamous denso iridiums about a week ago. yesterday my car started bucking and staggaring at wot horribly. I cranked the plugs tighter but its still doing it. I work at a parts store so for shits and giggles i tested my new alt to see if that was the problem and it came up with charging system default. I think this is the culprit but before I hit my wallet for another 180$ for another alt I figured Id make sure that was it. Any other CHEEP suggestion.... Im low on funds at the time so I need to be sure!

I dont think your alternator will cause that in the engine. I had the Iridums in my 90 AWD and engine ran like shit. switched over to the regular NGK coppers stock heat range and now Idles and runs smooth again. You also may have your gap set to large. It puts more pressure on the ignition system and at boost the boost will blow the spark out at high RPMS. Try gaping them at .028 and see what happens. Remove and install them on a cold engine to prevent striping the head while the engine is hot.
If that doesnt help put the stock NGKs in at the same gap and see what happens. Also I recomend the NGK spark plug wires. They are a great wire and fit perfect. :thumb:

the first thing you need to do is take those iridiums out of your car. They hold heat way too well for a turbo application and lead to preignition/detonation.

See if that takes care of your problem before you go dropping real money.

I read up on them their one of the coldest plugs out their?? I agree it feels like detonation and sounds horrible when it happens, but I checked out other posts and iriduims were in as "great" plugs thats the only reason I splurged on them. Otherwise I wouldnt have changed. Im gonna gap them out and post tommarow. If its still doing it ill get the ngk s. And ill never speak "Iridium talk" again. as I will then be 50$ in the hole

it could possibly be your alternator. it is possible that the plugs need more spark energy to fire than your old ones. Thus revealing that your charging system is goin south becuse it can't keep up with the current draw and limiting the spark energy availible.

Before you gap them just throw in some 99 cent copper ones (champion plugs will work just fine)...you may be plesently supprised.

The problem isn't the plug itself but the material it is made of . The material doesn't conduct the heat from compustion away as well and "holds" it at the tip of the plug. When you have combustion temps reaching 1600 on a DSM the plug stays hot enough to ignite the next compression cycle before the ignition tries to ignite it.

The only reason you don't diesel at idle is because the combustion temps go down and the fuel mixture is less volitile.

when my plugs were gapped too wide (0.030) i got this bucking you talk of.

gapped em down to 0.027 and it stopped.

i give it 9/10 odds that its those fancy pants spark plugs. havent you learned? always search the forums before you buy a part for your car; someone has already tried it and posted about it :thumb:

have i mentioned lately that i love you guys? :dsm: :laser: :talon:

I'd say change those plugs. Ive never experienced what you're talkin about personally but my friend had a 98 Neon with a Hahn Racecraft turbo kit on it, and he had the same exact problem you described. He was told to NEVER use those plugs on a turboed car. He switched to some inexpensive plugs and like that the problem disappeared. If nothing else, it's a cheap way of eliminating a smaller fix as a possible culprit before you drop money on a bigger, more expensive fix.

BTW...Ive heard nothin but great things about NGK-R plugs if you're lookin for more a performance based plug. I have the 7ESs on my car and they work very well.

Your My hero :D .Gapped them out and now it runs great. Im still going to get wires and maybe do that alt unless this new battery helps. Oh well culprit found!!! Iridiums stay :thumb:

Wait.

Hold the phone.

You work at an auto parts store, yet you put in spark plugs without gapping them?!?!?!?!

BWAHAHAAHAHAHAAHA.............

OK, sorry, had to give you some shit. :thumb: :dsm:
