I was reading a recent issue (within the last month or 2) of Modified Mags 'Power Pages' and they did a section on a 1g TSi AWD.

For those of you who dont know, what power pages is, is the editors take cars and do 3 or 4 mods to them and dyno them and see what kind of gains they can get from each mod. They give cost, HP/TQ, and time breakdowns for all the mods. Its really a cool idea.

Anyways, one of the mods they did to the 1g was somethin called Fuel Cut Defencer. I wish I had the magazine with me so I could write who makes it.

They put it on and dynoed the car, with it, an intake, and exhaust I believe it got something like a 37-43 HP increase! Thats a lot! Best of all I seem to remember it only cost like 250-300 dollars. Thats good gains for very little money.

So I was wondering is the a legit thing? I assume since its in a magazine, and fairly well known one at that, that it is for real. Has anyone ever heard of this item before?

It was Import Tuner and I wanted to know the same crap. I dont think its legit at all. They ended up gaining abour 100 WHEEL horse for less than 1000 dollars if I remember correctly. They did downpipe, exhaust, the HKS Fuel Cut Defencer, ground wires, and a few other small things. I dont think that would get you 100 horse. Also, they said it was a JDM motor, but everything that was different such as intake manifold was swapped back to a USDM. I havent read the article in awhile, but for some odd reason I kinda thought it had a 16g on it and they didnt say so. Who knows?

No, it's not legit. The FCD is made by HKS. It's only purpose is to eliminate fuel cut. It does not give you more hp. I've seen a few of those articles - they were so way off it makes me think they're just making things up to help sell their advertiser's products.

An FCD is a retarded band-aid and should never be used on a car.

It caps the airflow signal below where fuel cut is triggered, keeping you from ever reaching fuel cut. The flipside of this is, when you are flowing air above that set point, the ecu does not see it and you run lean.

An FCD is a good way to destroy a motor.

Import tuner, August 2003. It's a 92 AWD with a JDM engine but stock 14b and intake manifold. It did 157.2hp and 143.4tq stock to all 4 wheels. After HKS air filter, APEXi N1 cat-back and The Hyper ground system upgrade it made 184whp and 172.1lb/ft torque. Gain of 26.8whp and 28.7 lb/ft torque.

Import Tuner, November 2003.
Get 106HP For $640. Says so on the cover.
They left off at 183.6 wheel hp.
they added:
Apexi N1 downpipe. Peak HP: 219.9
HKS FCD. Peak HP: 267.1
Holly 255LPH Forced Induction Fuel Pump. Peak HP: 290.3

Thats what they claim, I have the issue right here in front of me. And note, they say NOTHING about an AFC of FPR for tuning. I dont believe that crap....no way in hell a fuel pump will give you 23.2whp. Prove all that to me and I will take a spoon and eat their ass. No way in hell.

Yeah I have that issue too, I couldn't find it. Thanks for finishing the list of mods and hp figures.:thumb: I don't see why they would lie but the numbers do seem to be a bit unrealistic.

Hmmm maybe when they turned the boost up and were running lean:confused: They probably put the pump in and netted the hp.

106hp for $640(or whatever) Isn't that why people buy dsms for cheap hp. Its funny how were all sceptics of our own philosophies:|

I didnt know you could turn the boost up without a boost controller:confused:

And if it were that easy to gain 100hp, I think everyone in this board would have those mods. I dont think Ive seen more than one person on here with a FCD. And I'd like them to explain this. How the hell do you control the fuel flow of a 255 with no regulator? And no AFC for tuning?? Come on now. That seems a bit unreal to me.

Well thanks for clearing that up for me you all. I almost want to buy one just to see what would happen. Ive got a bad motor I wouldnt mind losing if it really does destroy motors.

Besides that fact I thought only 2gs had fuel cut and rev limiter. I guess was wrong. Can someone clerify that for me?

both 1g and 2g had fuel cut and rev limiter.

only 2g fwd had the 130mph speed limiter.

In the import tuner article, they went from like 11 psi to like 19 psi to get that 106hp.

i bought my car with a defencer on it.

like everyone else said before, it just aids in fuel cut. You might as well pay 100 bucks, take out your ECU and send it to some guys like extreme motorsports so they can re-cap it and set the reset the rev limiters.

btw, i haven't heard of anyone buying those things in yearsl.

I was under the impression that the reason the boost increased was from the DP and exhaust. Thus the reason they were hitting fuel cut and needed the FCD. I dont think they had a BC.

I still think the FCD is stupid, and that their numbers are way off. But I just wanted to throw in my $.02 on the BC subject.
