Well I have a massive boost leak aroung the IM to head gasket:rolleyes: . Is there any way to pull the IM w/o pulling the whole head?

sure why not?? just disco the hoses on it and the couple connectors that attach to it.. then unbolt her.. it has a big tripod looking connection underneat that connects to the block.. you can get to that from under the car

remove the battery and the battery tray or else you won't be albe to get to the passenger side bolts
you can also try and get em from the bottom.
if not
pull the throttle body too.

less then an hour job

The hardest part is removing the bolts from the manifold brace. You'll most likely have to access them from underneath the car.

Good luck.

BTW: IMO, your car looks much better now sans the surfboard wing.

Thanks. I'm going to try that. I heard alot of people say it can't be done. I guess a needed a confidence booster before I attempt it ;)

Remove that starter and wear some good gloves. Spray with PB Blaster an hour before trying.

Removing the TB helps too, as those two studs can take a big bite out of the back of your hand.

we did it to install a nitrous kit on my friends car. let me just say its not fun at all... you have to get at some bolts under the car that you can't see at all, and you just have to fell for them and then get something over them. I was under the car for a while getting those bolts on and off that connect the intake manny to the head

Ya know... I tried for hours to get mine off, and ended up saying "screw it" and bolted it back together.

Never thought to remove the starer, god I feel dumb.

I should remove mine. It needs to be replaced anyway..:D

It's gonna be a #@%#@%#@%#@%#@% to get to all the nuts underneath the intake manifold.. esp w/ that triangle bracket that holds it to the block. Are you sure it's that gasket that's leaking? I'd make sure it's leaking there first before tearing into everything. You might as well just yank the head off to get to that gasket easier.. hehehe

No but it's somewhere around the IM I will have to remove it too find the leak wherever it is.

have you tried doing a pressure test? rotate your engine to TDC, where all the valves are closed, and pressurize the intake system. i think there's a vfaq for it somewhere. either on vfaq.com or dsm.org.

Ya I did that. That's how I found out where the leak was

:kicks rob in the scrotum:

why would their be a leak on the head gasket itself though?? or do you mean the gasket between the intake and the head? the othe thing is believe it or not, i think it may be easier to pull the head then it is to just pull the IM

Damn you guys must have had trouble with the manifold..

It's really not that bad, just a few connectors, the TB, the starter, and a few good pulls with a wrench.

1g's are easier yet.

Remove that starter and I bet you will be kicking yourself in the ass for not doing it sooner.

You don't need to completely remove that brace under the manifold, just the two bolts that go into the manifold.

All of this has been covered a few times before.

SEARCH. :)

If you guys think it's so hard, please come over my house, and I'll do them all day and night at $100 a pop :).

On a side note, I would resort to pulling the head as a LAST resort.
