how can you tell a 4g63 vs a 420a?

Ok, title says most of it, but I bought a used 99 eclipse rs. The person before me had done several mod's, and didn't go cheap on anything. I haven't had it that long, but today I had to have a new altenator put on and the person who put it on asked if I knew if the engine had be rebuilt or replaced cause the whole engine had been painted black. The car was set up for turbo when I got it. ie, intercooler, intake, ect. but no turbo, so guessing either their wasn't one on their yet, or they took it off before they traded it in. So how can I tell if they did an engine swap, or just used the 420a? Anyway besides tearing everything apart to see if the bottom end has had anything done with it? Or any other engine mods to accept more horsepower? Bigger injectors, ect. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

cam gears on left side its a 420a, right side its a 4g63.

search the gallery. the engine bays are totally different.

Left side (passanger) 420a, Right side (driver) 4G63. I highly doubt you have a 4G63 in your car as the mounts are totally different and there is a whole lot of cutting and welding that occures to do the swap. Basically nobody does it, so chances are you don't have it either.
