The TCU (MD750525) has now been rebuilt!

Before the rebuild, the torque converter would engage manually but not automatically or electronically.

Got the TCU back, the torque converter still will not engage automatically.

All four gears and solenoids are working and shifting properly.

The trans shop tell me that his source in Texas, said the torque converter doesn't have to lock up automatically, and it would not make a huge difference if it does or does not since it is not a turbo car?

Is this true?

I would like to see the torque converter work normally and lock up if that is what it is supposed to do.

What should I look for next?

Is the TCU, I just rebuilt, still at fault?

Would the fact of having the steering column from a maunal transmission car make a difference?
(car has the column from the original manual A/T, base option car with no cruise control, now has automatic transmission, transmissions were swapped.)

Please reply to this post ASAP. The shop I have the car at is running out of answers.

Check the main fuse panel in the car on the drivers side...Look for the 10amp fuse labeled
(4A/T)
(BOITE AUTO)
If its missing because its a five speed car, you will be in limp mode....
1g automatic cars have non-lockup converters (91-94)

Interesting!

You could be correct, I'll check the fuse panel for the missing fuse. The car I am rebuilding was ORIGINALLY a five speed 1G Laser. If the fuse is missing from the transmission swap,(Manual to Auto Transmission) this could explain my problem.

I'll keep you posted.

Are you absolutely, sure that the torque converter is not supposed to lock up?

I ask, because I talked to three dealers and another trans shop, and each tell different stories. One had mentioned that the torque converter WAS supposed to lock up at 40 MPH when the gears are supposed to up-shift.

Still Confused???

Please reply back and help my confidence be at ease.
