anyway my auto tranny is bad and i have to have aamco rebuilt it, im gonna put it on the lift sunday afternoon with my cousin and start tearing it down. anyone know how long it takes to get this thing out? also any tricks? how heavy is this beast. i do have a tranny jack so that will help, also its a gsx

the f4a33 i have been throwing around for the past couple of days isnt light ill tell you that, not sure how much heavier yours is going to be cause mines fwd. As for pulling it i would say pull engine and tranns and then split the two on the ground but thats my opinion.

not in favor of pulling the engine out

Nah, you don't need to take the engine out. I've removed my tranny twice or three times in the past year, due to my internals. All I can say is to make sure you have a friend with ya to help you maneuver the pile around. When you remove it, be careful that the speed sensor doesnt hit anything. When installing, I found its easiest to install the side and rear motor mount on the tranny then jack the tranny up into the mounts that are on the body of the car. Also, make sure to unplug all of the sensors and plugs on the tranny. When I do my tranny, I did it in this order:

drain tranny
remove all plugs/shifter cable
remove tranny cooler lines
remove axles (you can have them just hang there)
remove exhaust
remove x-fer case
remove dust cover (or whatever it's called)/flex plate bolts
remove tranny-to-motor bolts
pray that you don't drop it!!!

The part I hate the worst is the axles, I hate taking everything off of them.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

doesnt sound bad, i just did axles with hub bearings and spindles/control arms so everything should come off pretty easy i hope.

the only reason im going to pull the engine is so i dont have to press the trann back up in.

I just pulled my auto tranny and put in a new one. I took a bunch of pictures just havnt formed them into a write up yet, might also be a good time to change the seals in the transfer case.

how long did it take you? did you do it at home? im doign it at the shop

It isn't hard to do and not hard to do with the engine in the car. When I did my auto to 5 speed swap, I had the transmission out of the car in 2 hours. The transmission itself is HEAVY. You would need a few people to help left it down if you don't have a transmission jack.

P.S. IT IS HEAVY.LOL I had it supported on a hydrolic jack while the car was jacked up and once they thing started to move it was hard to keep it up on the jack.

So you didn't pull the engine at all for the swap? How much did it end up costing you? Was it a PITA?

No, i left the engine in. It isn't that bad removing and installing the transmission with it in. The swap costed a little more then I wanted it to because I didn't have all the parts I thought I needed and some things broke in the process, (lower control arm ball joints, etc) so I had to replace those. Doing the actually swap wasn't a PITA like I thought it would be. If i did it again, I could have it done in a weekend tops. If your interested in doing it I have a tech article on it.
