Loud knocking. Please help me.

Ok Guys. Just got my car together & running. I drove it a 1/4 mile down the road by the shop where I had some fab work done. I eased into it just a little & when I let off I heard what sounded like a vibration sound. Figured it was something touching or rubbing like the exhaust. I brought it home & when I went to back it off the trailer it backed up a little then It was like I was hung on something, but I wast. Well I went to drive it down the road the other day & it did the same thing. It would not back out of the shop. It goes in reverse then just stops like I yank the ebrake up. I pushed it out of the shop in neutral. I drove it a 1/4 mile down the road & back. That sound gets louder like a knock now. All the forward gears are fine. Well when I got back there was trans fluid all over the place from one of my trans cooler lines. I went to tighten the clamp up & it stripped so I know It was tight. This knock gets louder every time I start it up. I have layed under this car countless times. The knock is coming from between the motor & trans. The torque converter bolts are tight. Nothing is hitting. It sounded like no. 3 or 4 rod cap beating the oil pan. I've pulled the wires on no.3 & 4 checking for spun bearing. The sound gets louder. If it was a rod it would get quieter ya know. So, I've dropped the oil pan. Everything looks & feels fine. Nothing has been touching. There is no metal in the oil or filter. This has got me good. I dont know whether I have 1 or 2 problems. Obviously I have a reverse problen, but I dont know what could be knocking in the trans. I dont know if the knocking sound is traveling through the converter to the crank & making it sound like the bottom end in the motor or what. It makes the knocking sound idling below 1000rpm bc its camming. You give it gas it doesnt knock. It only does it when you let off the gas. This just makes me so sick bc I have so much time & money in this thing.

If you could post a video, that would be better, but one thing I would check would be the alignment of the shifter cable going to the trans. Your shifter may say reverse, but the transmission may not be exactly in reverse.

Well, several things come to mind. First, you could have a broken flexplate. If the sound is only coming from that area I might and say might rule out the auto tensioner on the timing belt. Bolts could be loose from the converter to the flex plate. This creates quite an interesting sound. By the way, it will egg out the holes in the flex plate and you will have to replace it if you continue running the engine. I would look there first. Post your findings and if possible, a short video clip.

Good Luck

as for the reverse thing is you intermediate shaft hooked up. the bolts that mount the shaft in my car snapped off in the block and the axle was just hangin, i didn't know until i backed up. the car jumped kind of. it felt like the motor was freakin loose and jerkin my car. it was just the axle hoping up and downcince it was no longer mounted securely. i drove it 15 miles on the freeway to my buds shop. goes forward fine but hates to reverse.

also made a nasty vibration around 2k to about 3.3k rpms

just a thought

Alright guys. The noise just mysteriously quit yesterday, but it still wont back up anymore than about 5ft. I go out there today, rev it up a few times & it starts that noise again. Fixin to pull the axles out now. I jacked the car up. put it in reverse. Two of us spun the wheels backwards & it doesnt bind. I was gonna make a video yesterday but like I said it quit. Probably gonna post one tonight.

ok, I found out that my flexplate to crank bolts came loose. That was the last thing I would have thought of. I used red locktite and torqued them to 100ft lbs. I'm gonna get a locking plate or something to hold them in. Gonna go ahead & get a new flexplate too.
