Help w/ OD on my daily driver!!

I bought this car this past winter, got it for pretty cheap with its only problem not having overdrive. Its a 95 mirage, but it shares the same f4a22 auto tranny as 1g auto dsm's, im sure w/ some small differences. Anyways, car drives fine w/ od off but with od on i just revs as its in neutral when its supposed to be in its fourth gear. From my searches that typically sounds like end clutches. I just replaced the end clutches and seals w/ ipt kit to no avail, still does the same thing. Im a dummy when it comes to auto trannys so I have the slightest idea as what to do next. I need some help, please!!

Well, the EXACT same thing just happened to me. Chances are, you may have done the same thing I did. A common mistake when installing end clutches it the outer seal of the piston inside the end clutch drum rips/tears upon installation. And because it's already being pushed inside the drum when it usually rips, you never notice, you just think your brand new seal is going in. So while your end clutches are actually fine, if the SEAL is ripped, you will rev up like it is in nuetral.

YES and I JUST figured this out today. When you put the end clutch back in, did you remember to put the large snap ring around the pressure plate? (Top plate on top of all the friction discs). If you didn't it will rev up. I couldn't find where mine went, because that was why my trans was revving up, and I found it on the transmission snapped where it should be when its on the clutch. Any questions just PM me.

Your talking about that larger snap ring...the one that is about as big as the clutch discs? Not the little one that's about the size of a silver dollar. There's a groove that the large one sits in? I never even noticed it.

Ya im talking about the larger one, there is a groove that it sits in. You kind of have to push it in there w/ a screwdriver.

I see. Well then, we are in the same pickle here. We both checked our outer seals, snap rings, etc. and my overdrive isn't working AGAIN! I'm going to call IPT first thing tomorrow and see what could be wrong because this is my daily driver too, and need to get it running right. I'll let you know what IPT says, they always have answers. Sounds like we may have the exact same problem.

NeEmo06, how did you get the large snap ring around the pressure plate into the groove. I'm having a little trouble getting it in the groove.

I first got it all inside the drum and let it sit in there, then i just pushed it in the groove with a screwdriver all the way around.

Did you have to push down on the frictions at all?

A lil not too much though. Use a clamp or vise if you need to push down on them.

NeEmo06, this end clutch is really starting to anger me. I can't stand driving with my RPM's at like 4000 just cruising...ugh.... I Had overdrive working today for about 10 minutes. My problem was my large snap ring didn't go in the groove. Once I put it in, overdrive worked. All of a sudden, VROOOOOM, pops out of 4th into neutral . I know I said I was going to call IPT a few days ago, but I never did because I just thought my problem was the snap ring. I am DEFENITLEY calling IPT tomorrow to find out what could go wrong... At this point I'm even willing to ship my end clutch out to them so THEY can look at it and see the problem, because this is my second end clutch kit from them. I should have some answers for us by tomorrow.

Alright, as promised, I talked to IPT and got some answers. NeEmo06, as far as yours, John at IPT said: Retrace every single thing you did, check every seal, every friction/plate, every snap ring... If everything is perfect, your problem may be electrical. Did you do any valve body modifications? Let me know. I think I may have split the seal again inside the drum, so I have to check that tomorrow.

No valve body mods, end clutch is only thing ive messed with. I wonder what he means by electrical? I know the switch on the gear selector is working, what else could he be talking about?

He said it could be a bad ground connection or something? Your best bet might be to just call him personally, the number is on the site.

If your car drives normal when the O/D is off then just revs when when o/d on then yes its your end clutches.
