1G AWD Auto Trans in a 2G

Does anyone have first hand experience with this? Is there anyway to put a 1g Turbo AWD Transmission in my 2G AWD Turbo?

From what i just expierenced, if your 2g is still a 7 bolt, it can be done for the most part( im still trying to figure out some things on mine)...I have a 93 auto awd tranny in my 95 TSi awd all bolted up and hooked up ( one connector is different and you would have to order a 7 bolt 93-94 flexplate) but i tried reverse today and teh car said no...but it did want to go foward...so ims till working on mine...otherwise 6 bolts have different mounting positions...

Huh that kinda sucks. What about a 3G semi auto in a 1G??? you would think they could work somehow right?

Reverse is all internal, that is strange that it wouldn't work. I'm not sure how you are putting a 1G trans in a 2G though since the 1G trans doesn't have provisions for the motor mounts that a 2G requires. Also the electrical is slightly different, as the 2G has a lockup.

Ok i ran some serial numbers off this new trans. Should be noted that i bought the trans as a "JDM 95-99 AWD Auto" ...the JDM i dunno about but, heres whats happened so far...i ran the numbers with my local dealer, NOW he tells me i have a LATE 2g auto awd(late 96-99 and that would explain the mounts ) and they had a Late 94 to mid 96 trans as well. However, the original flexplate did not work with the torque converter on the new trans. When i ordered a 92-94 7 bolt flex plate , it work perfectly? Thats why i assumed a 1g trans. Now you say 2g's have lock up, thanks, didnt know that actually, but shouldnt i still have reverse?...and one more thing(went to go get electrical manual), the ELC 4-speed Automatic Transaxle Control solenoid valve wiring is slightly different, the connector from the TCU has 4 wires(Yellow,Green,Orange, and Red) but the trans connector has 3 wires, Yellow, Green, and Orange....and as i read this manual, the red wire from the TCU is the "Torque Converter Clutch control Solenoid" ...assuming this is for the Lock Up?....So now, with all that ....Any info would be great , like, should i assume this tranny is garbage as well since reverse doesnt work? And this wire difference going to hurt anything? Thansk guys!

I would first start off by saying that the 3rd gen cars dont even share the same engines with a first gen. Its either a 3.0 V6 or 2.4 4Cyl. Havings aid that, i dont see how it would be even possible to try that. Best bet is to use a 1st gen auto trans, thats my thoughts on the issue...

Shifting that way wouldn't be any better/worse on the trans, it's just a different stick motion. The difference is in the shifter assemblies and electronics, it's not in the trans. It can be done but you have to do quite a bit of modifications to make it work, as well as some wiring. I did it in my car.

Just to be clear the brackets for 1g aren't the same. Trigger shifted auto transmistions are linked to it's TCU.
