I just bought my 95 Eclipse GSX a few months ago. I've never owned a turbo car, or a car at all, before this. I don't have a reference point to compare how my car performs compaired to other turbo cars or completely up to par turbo Eclipses.
It has an a/t transmission (when I purchased it I was just happy to have a GSX at ALL) and I'm having alot of throttle response issues. This is the deal: From a complete stop, to a start in traffic I must push the pedal in about 55-60% to get ANY response faster than +5mph. What I mean is, If I pushed it in about 10% I would only move at about 10mph, if I pushed it all the way up to 40% or so it STILL only gives me a speed of about 10-15mph. Then, I push it about half way or a little over and the boost fully kicks in and launches me, I accelerate to a normal speed from that point on. I understand that turbo takes a while to spool up, but if I left my gas pedal at about 30% for as long as I wanted the turbo wouldn't kick in and I wouldn't be moving much at all.
This is becoming a HUGE problem as I commute on the highway early in the morning and have to sit in traffic. Alot of people recommend me putting in a lower gear and travel like that. It's a solution for the TRAFFIC but at any other time (i.e. red lights, pulling out of a parking lot, etc) I will still have the slow accelration enless I punch it.
(This is a long post I know. Thanks for reading)
So what I have to do now is I have to punch the gas at about 70%, the engine pauses, I boost up to about 20-30mph then I have to let off of the gas immediately to about 20-30% to get my speed to about 40-50.
I cannot slowly accelerate from 20-30-40 mph at all. It feels like the only time my car will really do anything is if I'm boosting at 10psi+ It's either I go REALLY slow or REALLY fast to get anywhere.
I'm thinking I have a dying transmission and major boost leak. My options at this point are, pay for a rebuilt a/t, swap to an m/t or get a new car. I'm leaning toward M/T or a new car.
Please (if you're still reading this) post any suggestions you have (other than checking for boost leak because this weekend is going to be "boost leak weekend" in my driveway).
