ok... i bought a TC, shiftkit and endclutch from John recently. provided that i can't afford to go down to jersey and have him do it. i took it to a well recommanded shop (by members of New England DSM forum) right outside of boston called Turnpike Transmission. so i dropped the car off today and had a chance to go for a ride with one of the mechanics driving my car. here's what's been happening so far.

so far, the mechanic determined that the TCU could be bad. the gears stucks at 3rd gear when you decelerate and only shift back down into 1st or 2nd after you you floor it or come to a complete stop. and then he tried to retrive codes from the TCU, only according to the scan tool, it couldn't get ANY response whatsoever from the TCU. so that means, on top of the torque converter, shiftkit, and endclutch i had to replace, i might be looking at a possible busted TCU.

i told them to do a tranny diagnostic before they put on the parts, leak test and see if they can fix the ECU problem. and BTW, JOHN.... i told them to give you a call in case if they have ANY doubts in process of installation. cause you're such a nice guy :D

i'll keep you guys updated.

mean while..... pray for me please!

ok... got the baby back today.

turned out they hooked up the car to a machine and TCU turned out to be fine ( no errors from the TCU). so they slaped on the TC, shiftkit and endclutch.

i mean DAMN!!!... can you say "i got the power!!"

this new TC really boosted my HPs or freed up you may say. and i don't think any manual can shift as perfect as this car does now. all i can say is thanks to john's products. :)

the only problem i still have is. the gears still tend to stick sometimes. i think i might go ahead and look for a new TCU and just replace it myself see if that fixes the problem.

any other suggestions?

thats great dude! :thumb: hey can i ask you how much it costed to get all that installed? or atleast just the torque converter? what are you stalling at? :talon:

all that installed costed me around $650. it's cheaper if you do it all at once.

i haven't done a launch yet. still trying to take it easy and break it in.

about my question. does anyone have any ideas? or where can i get a used good condition TCU.

Glad you're happy with your stuff.

What do you mean when you say that the gears are sticking sometimes?

Also, no break in time is needed ;)

gears tend to stick meaning: everytime when i am in 3rd (or at least feel like it) and decelerate by either braking or letting it coast. supposely, the right way it should be is the transmission should shift down to 2nd and then to 1st accordingly. however, in my case, it doesn't happen all the time. i notice that it often just stays in 3rd when i decelerate and ONLY untill you come to a complete stop it'll then shift down to 1st. in this case, i either have to STOP to let it shift to 1st or floor the throttle then it'll catch on and downshift to 2nd or 1st. without flooring the throttle, if you only push it at a normal paste the car'll only slowly acelerate its way up in 3rd gear. i hope this makes sense. this is the best explanation i can give you.

it's hella annoying. i can't explain how annoying this is. it's been doing this ever since i got the car from the last owner who claimed "she" knew nothing about anything had no idea what i'm talking about.

the Turnpike Trans mechanic thinks that some elements is affecting the TCU's judgement in making decisions on when or how soon to downshift to 2nd or 1st.

That's the fussy logic of the tcu. The trans doesn't downshift to 2nd every time you slow down. It needs to sense that the car needs engine braking to slow down, like when going down a hill, in order to automatically downshift into 2nd from 3rd.

Otherwise, it will stay in 3rd until you come to a stop, or you step on the gas to make it downshift for acceleration.

so there's nothing wrong with my TCU then. humm... ok..

are all A/T cars like this? or just our car... cause my first car which was a shitty ford NT didn't do this.

thanks for letting me know. :)

how long does it take to learn!!??... cause it doesn't always do what i want. IMO it's a pretty stupid fuzzy logic :thumbdown . why not just make it so everytime you decelerate it'll downshift. so you get more torque out of re-aceleration without pushing the throttle that much harder. ;)

well... at least now i know there's nothing wrong with my TCU.

Its the fuzzy logic of the 2g TCU's, good thing to have, I love it. It learns your driving patterns in order ot react the way you want it too.

Somebody likes the fussy logic? This is definitely a first! :p

This is normal on our AT cars.
My car has been like this since day one and the only way the tranny will downshift when you slow down is when you do some aggressive driving. The TCU learns your aggressive driving behavior and adjusts the tranny's "reaction to your needs" accordingly.

AHHHHHHHH!!!!!...

i am now enlightened. :thumb: :D

excellent! i was just wondering the other day why my car only downshifts once in awhile..... :dsm: :talon:

do i really need a torque converter???
i mean i like holding down the brake till 2800-3000
den letting go

i just want the shift kit and end torque kit

a new torque converter upgrade will improve the efficiency of torque transfer from the flywheel to the tranny; thus freeing up more torque and horse power. yes!, torque converter is a must-have for A/T upgrade.

where are you looking at buddy!!?... you're here at A/T DSMtuners, the playground of IPT. ;)
