I just installed a set of RHINOPAC hatch struts in my 1g and I must say they are very strong. I picked up a set of 2 for $38 shipped from rockauto.com. They were the only ones I could find that had the bottom brackets already on them besides the garbage auto parts store stong arm ones which cost $28 each. I would def recommend the RHINOPAC struts. My hatch now opens by itself with hardly any effort from me.
