97-99 Front Bumper Cover Removal

This is a step by step guide on how to remove the front bumper cover on a 2g DSM.

Tools
-Phillips Screw Driver
-1/4" Drive Ratchet, 12" Extension, Swivel Head
-10mm Socket, 1/4" Drive
-Flat Blade Screw Driver
-Towel

1. Start by jacking the front end of the car up. This will give you room to crawl under the car to remove a few bolts.

2. Pop the hood and remove the front bumper center plate. There are five 10mm bolts.


3. Now remove the side markers. You can pop them out with a screw drive. Wrap the screw driver with a towel to protect your paint. Once they are popped off disconnect the wiring harness the completely remove them. Do this to both sides.


4. Now look under the bumper and at the top there is a 10mm bolt (circled in red) holding the bumper cover on. Remove this bolt on both sides.


5. Remove three plastic screws holding the splash guard and bumper together. Turn the wheel to the side to allow room for a screw driver to fit between the wheel and splash guard. Do this on both sides.


6. Peel back the splash guard where the top screw was and remove the 10mm bolt. Do this on both sides.


7. Remove all the bolts holding the bottom portion of the cover onto the car.


8. Pull down on the side portion of the bumper to kind of pop it out of place. This will give you a little more room when removing the last headlight bolt in step 12.


9. Remove four plastic screws on the top of the center inlet of the bumper.


10. Remove the top bolt on each headlight. This is the easiest one to get to!

11. Remove two other bolts that will be near the outside corner of the headlights almost underneath the adjustment knobs. These are somewhat hard to get to. Just feel around for them.


12. Now there is one bolt left holding the headlights in place. To get to this bolt use a 1/4" drive ratchet with at least a 12" extension and a swivle head. Also tape everything together with masking tape because it's very easy to drop a socket in there. If you drop the bolt it's no big deal because you can pick it up easily once the headlight is removed. Use a towel and slide the ratchet in between the bumper cover and headlight. Use a flash light to find the bolt to remove.


13. Crawl under the car and disconnect the wiring harness for the headlight. You make also want to remove a screw that holds the harness onto the bottom of the headlight. The screw will be under the three wires and if taken out it will allow the harness to move which makes taking the headlight out much easier! Then pull the headlight and disconnect the wiring harness for the turn signal.


14. Now remove the two plastic screws on the top portion of the cover which was covered by the headlight. Do this on both sides.


15. Now just slide the cover off and you're done!
