So after fondling around with myself personally quite a few times and since I see NO write up on how to do this, I'll volunteer and do so, because I'm not a fan of the stock radio or single DIN head units. Also note, this install is for any 2g Eclipse with a stock head unit. If you want to hunt down the stock brackets, 3 things: 1) good luck. 2) stock 1g's dont work. 3) here's a pic.
As for pictures, I did this on a car that had some previous wiring done and a single din already installed. Here's the start.
Degree of difficulty (1-10, 10 being hard): 4
Time to complete: 90-200 minutes
Tools needed:
The Double DIN head unit of choice
A Philips Screwdriver
Electrical Tape or a Soldering Gun
Not necessary but still a good idea (to make the install alot easier), a 95-99 wiring harness. Also, disconnecting the negative end on the battery is always a good idea, but I didn't do it and nothing bad happened. Also, some speaker wire is another not-so-bad idea to have on hand as well.
STEP 1: Remove the center console side panels- They should be in by 4 screws (one on each side hidden by a round plastic cap). The panels should then slide forward and life out. On the passenger side, it's a good idea to open the glove box and make sure the e-brake is on. Makes removing the panel alot easier. If you tapped into your ECU, this should be second nature removing the panels.
STEP 2: Removing the Center Console- First thing is remove the black trim piece that covers the air control switches. To remove that piece, just grab it and it pops right out.
The unscrew the 2 screws where circled.
Next, pop out the cup holder/cigarette tray plastic piece and underneath is 2 screws. To pop it out, just grab it and pull it up..
Finally, on the center console compartment down on the sides (slightly behind the seats) are 2 more screws, one on each side. Remove them. Now you should be able to fully remove the center console. If you have a stick, this should be fairly easy, however with an automatic, it wants to slide against the shifter. Just go slow and take it easy (or if you really want this to be easy, put the car in the neutral, you're e-brake should already be on).
STEP 3: Removing the old radio- On both sides of the radio, a gold bracket on each side should be holding the radio in. If it's aftermarket, it's the dash it. Unscrew the 2 screws on each side from the car and now the radio should be able to slide out.
Next, on each mounting bracket is 4 more screws. Remove them. On an aftermarket single din, it's just two. Regardless whether you have a stock or aftermarket head unit, DO NOT LOSE THE BRACKET/DASH KIT/SCREWS. Removing the head unit gets a little tricky. For the automatic people, if you want to put it in neutral and pull it out, that would be easiest, then disconnect the cables.
STEP 4: Installing the new head unit: Now, this is the part where things get sketchy sort of. If you decided to buy a wire harness, great. All you have to do wire the new wire harness to the one that comes from your head unit then connect the harness. If you didn't, then you have to cut the harness off of the stock head unit and wire everything yourself. Also if you do this, you won't be able to put the stock head unit back in. Now as for finding a ground, that was tricky for me. What I did was take the speaker wire and connect it to the head unit's wiring harness and then took a screw and there's a small hole in a piece of metal directly back where the head unit was.
----If you have the stock brackets
After reconnecting the wires, just reverse all the steps you taken and the end result should look like mine. Note that some head units will leave a gap. some are noticeable...some aren't.
----If you have an aftermarket single din
This part will be something like hell. I wish I would have took pics, but I was rushed. Anyways, that you have to do is cut the sides that held the single din (refer to the VERY first pic). MAKE SURE YOU DON'T CUT OR SHAVE THE PART THAT HOLDS THE HEAD UNIT IN (refer to the first 2 pics of step 3). Smooth it out or else you will have a pretty hard time screwing the head unit on the plastic brackets, or back into place. After you put the brackets on the head unit, make sure it will fit in the hole right and it won't lay flat (remember, it has to be at an angle). If everything is good, begin reversing steps and you'll be set.
BTW the final pic is from my dead GST Spyder, not the GST I have now.
