My mom worries about the safety of the stock 1g seatbelts. How they are automatic. Because some kid driving a 1g eclipse crashed into a ditch and the door flew open so the seatbelt move out of the way and the kid got like crushed in the door when it slammed close. So she is debating buying me some cheapo APC bucket seats off ebay and some 4 point racing harnesses. I tell her it'd be a waste of money. Is it?

wtf? So in this you're saying:

the car does in a ditch and the door opens
the automatic seatbelt opens for 3 seconds, freeing the driver
the driver falls half way out the door
the door closes on the driver

How the hell is that going to happen? I've never seen any car accident with the doors OPEN.

I know. I have no clue. I'm just going by what my mom said.  Who knows. I think my mom just worries to much.

Tell your mom we said she's whacky. It's about impossible for that to happen.

The rat-trap belts do have the one advantage of taking a conscious effort to not use them. It's much better if the lap belt is used with them, but the lower half of the dash is supposed to catch your knees in a frontal impact.

I don't like the rat-traps, but I like airbags less.

Dude if your mom is going to buy you racing seats then BAYAM free seats, otherwise there is a lap belt, and in this state if you are not wearing the lap belt you are breaking the law

Also if you get hit from behind hard enough, with out the lap belt your body flies foward and it can cutyour neck pretty bad
