Buffing out scratches on headlights?

My driverside headlight for my 97 has a pretty deep scratch in it actually a couple. Is there any way to buff these out so that it is smooth and clear again?

you can wet sand them out with like some 1500 grit or more paper

I'm assuming it's just buffing the lenses with some polishing stuff... There are LOTS of cars out there with that problem - rather ingenious little business if it flies...
