I'm wondering if anyone out there knows how to disable the airbags . . .
I'd like to hook up a switch to disable them so when I'm out autocross-ing, I dont have to worry about them accidentally deploying at a low speed impact.

Any ideas?

everytime they are unplugged, you have to go to the dealer to get them reactiviated. so if you want to get them reactivated by the dealer everytime you hit the switch, go for it.

the dealer doesnt reactivate them, they just turn the SRS light off on the dash. I took out my pass. airbag when I painted my dash, and the light came on cause I turned the car on before I hooked everything back up. Mistu told me If I was sure I hooked them up right not to worry about it cause they would still work, but I had them look at it anyway cause I was afraid I did something wrong.

The SRS light has the same function as the ENGINE light. your engine wont stock working if it turns on, its just telling you an error code has been saved, same as the SRS light.

If your certian you know what your doing and have the balls to go ahead with it, you shouldnt have a problem. Just know you need Mitsu to turn the light off when the time comes, and some states wont let you pass inspection if you have warning lights on in the dash.

Simple. Unplug the computer. That's what I did. Took me 5 minutes.

does this throw a CEL code?

Disconnecting the computer turns off the SRS light and does not throw any codes.

That's exactly what I was just wondering . . .

The SRS light will come on when unplugged, and go back off when plugged back in.NOTHING else is required ,No reseting anything or unhooking the battery or the ECU is needed.Just do the unplugging and plugging back in with the ignition off.And I would not recommend putting a switch on the airbag wires, the diagnostics in a SRS system are very sensitive.

but if he runs the car with the airbag out, the light will come on. It will stay on even if he turns the ignition of and plugs the airbag back in. you can do whatever you want to the car with the ignitions off, but as soon as theres power its gonna toss a code. and that code will turn the light on and leave it on until mitsu turns it off.

Not true. That is not how the SRS works, the light is only on as long as a fault is present.Once the fault is corrected(plugging the bag back in), the light will go off.Like I said above NO resetting of anything is required.I have had the bags out of my car(and others) many times.

Well I dont know what to tell you then. I took out my airbags this summer, with the ignition off. Drove to a friends house and the light turned on. Came home later that night, put them back in (with the igniton off) and the light was still on when I turned it back on. Everything was hooked up corretly.

Are we both talking about the same thing? To me it sounds like you never turn the car on when the airbags are out. If thats that case, no, it wont throw a code. But as soon as you turn that igniton and there is no airbag hooked up, it will throw a code to the ECU and you will have to get Mitsu to turn it off.

I drove around for 3 months with no airbags in my car.The SRS light is nothing like the MIL light.Fault gone = Light gone

Concerning whether the light stays on or not . . . did perhaps one of you disconnect the airbags themselves and the other disconnect the control unit underneath the center armrest? Would that account for the differences in your guys' experiences?

Yup- that's the one :)

Odd, you think maybe your light burned out lightning? I unplugged the SRS computer once, and started the car up.. Needless to say, that d*mn light is still on to this day b/c the dealer wants $60 to turn the freaking light off.... First they tried to tell me that I needed a new SRS computer. hah.

My SRS light comes on when I start the car, so its not burnt out.I have done this on more than on 2g dsm, as well as other late model vehicles.I not sure what happens when you unplug the control unit though.I am not expert on SRS systems, but from what I do know they do not "store" codes like the ecu.Fault = Light and Fault Gone = Light Gone

Yes that is what I'm talking about. Disconnect the computer and the light stays off.

Why would you plug it back in? Are we talking about the same thing? See my above post.

How exactly does one go about removing the "console inner box" to get at
the SRS ECU? The manual of course, shows exactly where it goes (as if I
couldn't tell by looking at it), but no info on how to actually get it to
come out. I've tried prying it from all different angles, etc., but no luck
so far.
