I am Painting the vinyl in my car (dash, vinyl on the doors, etc) what have you guys used to clean this? Would armor all cleaner wipes work, or should i use somethign stronger, like 409 or fantastick?

The paint will not stick to good if you use formulated protecters such as armor all.. etc.. Try and stay away from this.....

Use soap and water, and clean it as best you can. let dry and do your primer, paint, and if you want...... clear coat it.

I think i'll take some mineral spirits, and dilute it with a little water.

Wouldnt the clearcoat make it a little firm?

so when he clear coats it after all that..will it be shinny or just normal looking? im new to this.....thanks

Vinyl die will probably be your best bet.The best cleaner is 3M general purpose adhesive cleaner. And if you use armor all or similar you will more than likely have problems no matter what cleaner you use or how many times you clean it.

Clear Coat will protect the paint from chipping off, and is easier to clean if the part u paint gets dirty. It may look a little shinny if you put on a lot of coats, and will feel smooth....... but for the most part it will be unnoticed.

If you are painting the dash and doors, clean it with MEK or rubbing alcohol, then use krylon fusion paint. THERE IS NO PREP. WORK REQUIRED!!!! All you need to do is make sure there is nothing on the vinyl and you give the paint time to dry. Do a bunch of thin coats, at 15 min. intervals, to avoid runs and drips. It would be in your best interest to NOT use clear coat, as it dries hard, and it will crack. if you had the time, you could coat everything that you want to paint with fiberglass resin, and sand it smooth, then you will have a smooth, sleek look, but it takes time and patience. good luck in whatever you do, e-mail me if you have questions.

Everyone speaks really highly of the Krylon Fuzion, but i have had good results with dupli-color paints. Is there any advantage to the krylon over the dupli-color?

i've used krylon fusion and it worked well....

I used rubbing alcohol to take off my armor all before i painted it and i used clear polyurethane to clear coat it. So far its held up good.

i used the krylon fusion paint in my car it worked good exept it left the door panels sticky to this day on mine and my friends ccar, every thing else worked fine, its been like 2 months since they have been done, now i found new stuff its called color coat by sem, its perfect since its flexible paint vinylpro.safeshopper.com

if you are painting the window moldings be carefull and mask the area good. i painted mine with the dupli color vinyl paint. it came out awefull so i ended paying the dealorship the $40 for a new piece.

ok listen carefully, its easy and easy to do. go online look for SEM paint called color coat in the color u want, i have satin black, clean whatever u will paint with rubbing alcholhol. clean it good this will take everything off even all that stupid armor all sh*t off, cus armor all clogs up the poors, this sem paint isnt paint its dye. u can use it for vinyl leather and all plastics, its great i did my two door panels and also my back half of the interior panels. trust me get that paint in the color u want and then clean it like i said, will work, u will be happy!!

ps. the other stuff will work what these people say but i personally think mine worked 100% perfect

Like I said, vinyl dye will work the best.Rubbing alchohol is a poor cleaner and will NOT remove armor all, but it doesn't sound like he uses armor all anyway.

Is it jsut me, or does "painting your vinyl dash" sound like the stupidest idea ever?? I mean, talk about how to really screw a car up...

where do you get the vinyl dye that lightninggsx was talking about
Most automotive stores have vinyl dye in a spray can, but be careful when spraying it.

How do I handle scratches in the trunk area? I am pretty sure they are deap enough that they will still be noticed even after painting.

Get some sand paper and smooth out the rough edges, then fill the scratches with fiberglass resin, then sand till smooth, clean it, then paint away! good luck!
