How Do I Do This???

I have a question for anyone that can answer this. umm, in my first gen there really is no place to place a tach so i want tp place my shift light in the car and hook itup to the stock tach. well, the question is how do i get the light to actually work, or does the light come on at like redline or what? can someone please help me w/ this cuz i am stuck!
