im trying to build a competition system, and wondering what is the loudest in 2g dsms? ported, sealed, or bandpass.... i have a sealed in now, and its okay, but i ran a single 12 bandpass and it was pretty loud... i'd like to know if any of you have experimented with different types of boxes in your eclipse/talon....

i guess is that bandpasses work for our cars, because of the hatchback, they dont always work for all cars. ive looked at two different bandpasses..... two 12's which hold 400w rms, and two 15's that hold 1000rms

if i go with the 12's, i can run an 800w amplifier
if i go with the 15's, i can only run about 500w - 600w amp

im trying to stay in the middle competition classes, using hte IASCA classes. i dont want to be competing with a guy whos got 5 subs and two rf 2400w amps...

which box do you think is the loudest, and if bandpass, which do you think i should go for?

any input at all would be most helpful

i always leand toward a sealed box. they seam to give a little more spl to me id go with a sealed box a a JL W7 for an spl car

i used to be BIG into car audio competitions but i am now into performance since i got this car. :D but if you are wanting spl do not use sealed; and about bandpass, you prolly don't have enough room to have a proper size enclosure. (most prefab bandpass boxes are way too small and aren't good at all) I suggest you run the biggest ported box you can w/ the sub facing up towards the hatch and the ports facing backwards. If you would like for me to help you with the design pm me and i can help ya out.

:dsm:Hey i have a sealed box in my trunk and i think performance wise is as good as it gets, considering that i made the box myself and it sounds better than any prefab box i ever had, what id like to do is fabricate a fiberglass face to give it a competition look, any suggestions?:dsm:

Ported boxes own all! Go port and subs pointing up at the glass, or facing backwards. Make the subs and port face the same direction. I run two solo 15's on a crossfire vr2000d. I meter in the mid to high 150's with no sound deadner. I hope to get low 160's with a lot of deadner and another 2.5 cubic feet. Just make sure you tune the port correctly for the subs.

That looks nice :thumb:, but where do you put your groceries

I would sell it, but I wouldnt ship it. This thing weighs a lot. Subs and all it weighs a couple hundred pounds. takes 3 people to put it in there. and where do I haul the groceries? In my grocery getter (SRT-4)LOL.
That way the milk and ice cream is still cold when you get home. With the system in the eclipse all the soft drinks would be flat by the time you got home.

I competed is DB Drags for many years before getting into car performance, and I always used sealed boxes. I like the quality more from sealed. But, if you can tune a stereo properly, ported/vented boxes have more potential to hit a higher SPL. That is, if you have room in you DSM for one. I always used my old 90 Civic hatchback for competitions and we won the street 1-2 class, then switched it up and won superstreet 1-2 and then street 3-4. Sealed has always worked for me, but ported and vented should be a little louder.

Below is a pic of the sealed box I made for my old 95 NT. It was NOT good for high SPL but the sound quality was excellent. And I thought my 420a was slow before this system......
