I've really not heard. We had one on the supertanker I sailed on, the Keystone Canyon, back in '80, and it was experimental then. I was a little surprised to see them being offered for cars and trucks.

what are they? what do they do?

Suppose to send an excess of negative or positive ions (I forget which) which in turn eliminates oxidation of metal. Basically it's Bull%$it.

My 96 Rs has one on it, came with it when it came over the boarder from texas. They didnt say anything about it. And the only place there is any rust on the car is behind the radio, but it looks more like dust, cause you can brush it off with your hand. and on the roof where someone dropped something or something like that. Anyways.

Southern cars barely rust if any. I'd Krown it as soon as possible.

Somebody way smarter then me (thats not saying much), was talking about the science behind those and they sounded kind of legit.

Why would they be illegal in canada regardless of if they did or did not work?

Apparently they don't work. It was all over the news about a year ago. Why? I don't know, but it's enough to convince me not to buy it.

Ive long considered the electronic ones to be snakeoil, youve got current flowing through the car, so long as you have potential ground and any metal point, so only the stuff suspended on plastic would be affected...

what has been proved over the years is using welded pieces of sacrificial zinc plating,
when the metal oxidizes the zinc gives up electrons, saving the steel, when the zinc rusts, you just replace it,
works pissah on boats, as far as practicality on an auto I dunno
