steering wheel removal [Merged 3-7] removing taking off

i removed the air bag and unhooked the wires, i also took the big center bolt which was a pain, now how do i actually take the wheel off, 2 ppl pulled and it didnt even budge, whats goin on?

You need a wheel puller

heres a tip,if you don't have a puller (yes i know he's done)use your palms and strike the wheel left and right as well as up the top and bottom,then use your knees as leverage (adjusting the seat might help) and give a pull... remember it doesn't matter how strong you are (unless of course you are very strong,then stop reading here!)its just depends on your technique..

my friend and I (this has been done in several cars, not all dsms) get on either side of the wheel and just hit it at the same time with our palms a few times. always flys right off.

Will be installing an aftermarket steering wheel. Did the search and read a few references to a wheel extractor tool. Is this tool absolutely necessary or only for the few stubborn wheels?

Most the threads that came up with search were garbage... typical of most search results.

They certainly help. The splines that the steering wheel fit over are almost always stubborn. Without the puller you'll be inclined to beat on your steering column and wheel with a hammer trying to break that thing loose, and that's no good. You can pick one up pretty cheap at the auto parts store, or if you were really inclined to save money you could make one yourself with some thick steel and a few bolts & nuts. I'd suggest the parts store puller. I've got my money's worth out of mine.

MARK THE SHAFT SPLINE at CENTER OF THE OLD STEERING WHEEL!

Then:

Take any thick piece of Steel scrap & drill 2 holes in it about the same spacing as the 2 jacking Bolt holes in the Steering Wheel Hub - Put a little load on these small bolts - Then whack the center of your "puller" where it's bearing against the Steering Wheel Shaft threads - It'll pop right off.

when i did mine, i just unscrewed and un-bolted anything that need to be, then to remove it, i just hit it really hard with my fist and vibration knocked it loose off the splined shaft, then it just slid right off... sounds ghetto, but it worked for me, good luck

The kit that you've got pictured there looks exactly like what I have and it worked perfectly for me.

The usual method is to look at it very crossly, chant, "Come on, you miserable son of a" and right at "bi***" give it a good, solid palm-punch at 10 o'clock while pulling up at 7 o'clock.

If you have your nose near the rim, it works every time.

You should roll down the passenger window before starting, so nothing's damaged when you throw the just-removed wheel.

I've never had to use a puller, but I'm kinda big. Not that it's just a matter of size.

i bought a new steering wheel from ebay. first thing u wanna do is disconnect the negative battery terminal, let it sit for a couple of minutes, then unbolt the bolts on the back of the wheel, four of them, and that takes off the air bag, and there should be 2 wires connected to that, remove them. from there, there is a nut inside the rest of the wheel, u take that off, and takes the rest of the wheel off. then u will see a weird lookin thingy that the 2 wires connects too, is has a gear type thing that spins, has 4 screws on it, remove them, and u have to find where the wires go from there, u will probably have to take the top and bottom part of the steering cover off to find them, but u will have to disconnect them to get the steering clock gear thingy completely off. from there u put it back together, but the hub in, put the nut on inside the hub, add wheel, and ur done, i think thats everything, if not, feel free to ask me, as i have done this about 2 weeks ago

I went to Auto Zone and had them order me a Haynes Repair Manual for my car. It has been really useful, has pictures, torque specs, measurements and capacaties and wiring diagrams. Everything you should need to properly mod and maintain your car. Was about $15 if memory serves me correctly.

Theres one little screw to remove on the center section bottom of the steering wheel, you remove this screw to remove the center piece of the steering wheel. After thats out of the way remove 3 screws holding on a bracket so you can get to the nut holding the wheel to the column. Remove nut If your a strong guy grab ahold of the wheel and jerk on it a few times it should come off. I bent mine pulling on it . If you can't get it off, get to the auto parts store and rent a steering wheel remover.

The screw to remove the center... is that behind the wheel? How do I access it?

Its hard to explain without being there. Straighten the wheel out level. Lay on the floor looking at the bottom of the wheel. You should see a whole, in the hole is a screw that holds the steering wheel center cover on.

i have read all the forums on steering wheel and wanted to know if anyone knows where you can find a good guide with pics (im very visual) on removing a stock wheel and installing an after market wheel. another question is the any wheels that have tlit wheel function for after market wheels. My car is a 99GST

As far as I know the tilt wheel function is part of the steering column, not the wheel itself. So when you switch to a dif. steering wheel, your tilt function should still work.

im not talking about rasing the height the wheel i was talking about the "tilt" two different functions

that factory "tilt" is all you get .
its pretty easy to remove - 2 bolts on the rear of the wheel to remove the airbag, unplug the bag,horn,cruise.
remove the 1 LARGE nut holding the wheel on the shaft.
And yank the wheel off.. you may need a puller - or some taping on the rear with a hammer.
